Bill Wright is best known as the host of the Radio Program "Roadtrippin'" heard on WKHS 90.5 FM every Thursday night from 8:00 - 10:30. Bill began his broadcasting career in 1993 on a local cable access television station in Bowie MD. Bill produced and hosted the Saturday Night Circus. It was basically Bill's radio show heard over a community, television bulletin board. After a couple of shows Bill realized that he could remove the bulletin board and replace it every week with Bill's video footage that he would obtain on a daily basis. The footage was all taken on a Sony Handycam that Bill kept in his possession at all times. So, nothing was ever rehearsed. It was just random video footage taken around the area; often wildy strange and funny. Bill had fun doing this show and quickly realized he wanted to do more. So, he enrolled in The Broadcasting Institute of Maryland, majored in radio and graduated at the top of his class! After graduation, Bill went on to work as the overnight DJ at Fox 99.3 FM in Winchester, VA. Fox 99 was a Classic Rock station on the top of a mountain in the Shennandoah Valley. The station was programmed with a Classic Rock format, but did allow a good bit of freedom as well. Every other song was chosen by Bill. So, usually those songs were deep album tracks that you wouldn't typically hear on commercial radio. Later that year, Fox 99 was sold to a Major Corporation. Most of the staff was let go but the New Owner asked Bill to stay on board. He was given a contract and was told to have it back in 2 weeks. The next day, Bill was told that his new name would be "Kermit D. Frog" and the station was now Froggy 99. Bill was not about to call himself that. The Management said that if he didn't call himself that, he would have to pick one of the name's on their list. Names like Al E. Gator and Ann Phibean. Bill actually called himself "The Swamp Thing" for the next two weeks. To make things worse they programmed the format. They went from playing Little Feat and The Allman Brothers to Whitney Houston and Michael Bolton. Bill hated it. When the first two weeks were up and his contract was due, Bill got his paycheck and informed the station that he was going back to Maryland and would not be coming back. Just about that time, Bill had heard that Jake Einstein (former owner of 99.1 WHFS in Washington, DC) had purchased Rock 103 FM in Annapolis MD. Rock 103 was a popular station that played mostly heavy metal music. Bill was familiar with the station because he had interned at Rock 103 while attending Broadcasting School. But, he knew that if Mr. Einstein was the new owner, it was sure to change to Progressive Rock. And that is exactly what happend. The call letters changed to WRNR and the DJ's were hired for their knowledge in Rock-n-Roll. They were able to play what ever they wanted, whenever they wanted. This was every DJ's dream! Bill immediately sent his resume and audition tape to the new station. He went for an interview and was essentially ignored. Then, Bill had an offer to work at WYRE in Annapolis. This was WRNR's AM station at the time. It was located right down the hall from WRNR and Bill accepted the position. At the time, the AM station had four regular, full time Jocks that ran all the shifts. It was an Adult Contemporary station that played Soft Pop hits like Simon & Garfunkel and America. About a month in, WYRE's Program Director resigned. Now there were only three Jocks. Bill noticed that WRNR didn't hire anyone to take the Program Directors place. So the three jocks picked up the slack. Soon after, another Jock left and never returned and no one was hired to replace him. Now it's just Bill and the one other Jock. At this point, Bill realized that the Management of WRNR was not paying much attention to their AM station. So, he began to get creative. First he started bringing in his own records in and playing what ever he wanted. Then he started doing a weekly Blues Show and a weekly Acoustic Show. Flashback Fridays became regular. He was making the best of what seemed like a "going nowhere" situation. Then one Friday afternoon, Jake Einstein came into the WYRE Studio while Bill was on the air. Bill knew he was either going to get hired or fired. Jake asked Bill what was going on in there. Bill informed him about his Blues Show, Acoustic Show and everything else he had been doing. Jake asked Bill if he had ever heard his son Damien's Blues Show on 99.1 WHFS. Bill said yes. Jake told Bill to see him in his office later that day. Bill was very surprised when Jake offered him the Morning Drive shift on 103.1 WRNR. Bill was to start immediately. Bill spent the next 10 years at WRNR, from 1994 - 2004, playing whatever he wanted. In 1997 Bill created and began doing his Roadtrippin' Radio Show. Bill was very into the Grateful Dead for most of the 80's and was becoming quite the festival goer for most of the 90's. He was also heavily into traveling to Phish shows for a few years. Bill was noticing how incredible the Jam Band scene was becoming. The bands he was discovering were no longer mainly Dead cover bands; like they were in the 80's. These bands had so much talent and originality and Bill was blown away. Roadtrippin' aired on 103.1 WRNR every Friday night from 9:00- Midnight. Listeners got to hear all these bands that Bill had discovered while on the road at festivals. Over the years bands like Phish, Widespread Panic, Moe and Gov't Mule have become giants in todays music scene. Bill was there when there would be 50 people in the audience and he is there now when there are thousands. Bill continues to do his Roadtrippin' Radio Show on 90.5 WKHS in Baltimore every Thursday night; playing whatever he finds and thinks you will dig. Bill believes that todays Jam Band scene is just a continuation of what bands like the Grateful Dead, Jefferson Airplane and Jimi Hendrix started in the 1960's. Bill's radio show never seems to forget those Classsic Artists either. Roadtrippin' is the perfect blend of todays Jam Band scene and yesterdays Psychedelia. Bill has recently begun to bring his show on the road. He can actually be hired for your Event! Why hire a typical Electric Slide/Clubby DJ for your Wedding, Party or Event when you can have Bill play all the music that you love, with enthusiasm and creativity?
