About me:
My name is Jef De Smet and music is my passion. I have been collecting vinyl for over 7 years. During lunch breaks at high school I frequented the vinyl shops in my hometown Gent (Fried Chicken, Music Mania, Music Man) in search for new beats. Back then I was really obsessed with jungle and drum & bass. LTJ Bukem, A Guy Called Gerald, Goldie, Crystl, Doc Scott, T Power and their colleagues wrote the soundtrack of my teenage years. Unfortunately, the post 2000 era in d&b’s history is in my honest opinion marked by a smaller creative input than in the 90’s. Despite some true crusaders (Paradox, Breakage, Dom, Spirit, Bailey, Amit, Outrage and others) who kept on pushing the deeper sound in this dance music, the so called scene often made a somewhat childish and saturated impression on me. As a result of that I started to seek for new musical thrills in other musical genres and through the years I started to appreciate more and more hip hop, techno, house, downtempo, dubstep, IDM, indie-electronics and so much more. Next to that I also became really interested in reggae, soul and funk. Nowadays I don’t spill my energy anymore on debating what music is good, I just try to push the sounds I feel through organizing parties with my friends and through my dj sets. As Billy B you might hear me play the occasional jungle set, but I get booked more often for a dubstep/garage/wonky set. Together with Peter De Smedt I play soul, funk, house, techno, hiphop and more under the Ghost Dogs alias. Our objective is to make people dance on warm music without annoying them with the Frans Bauers and Bon Jovi’s of this world.
