Billy Davis switched fields (from cotton to music) when his family migrated from
Mississippi to Detroit. There he hooked up with Hank Ballard, who had a string of R & B hits during the 1950s-60s. Hank Ballard & The Midnighters achieved international fame as one of the most risqué groups of their time with songs like "Annie Had a Baby.” At one time they were the 1 vocal group in the world. In 1959, Ballard released his song "The Twist" and a year later, Chubby Checker's version went to 1 on the pop charts. This brought about renewed interest in Ballard for a short time, but the group dissolved in 1965. Billy subsequently worked with Sam Cooke, Jackie Wilson, Little Willie John, Joe Tex, and Don Covay. Billy has over 50 years in the entertainment business, and is a prolific songwriter with five CDs to his credit. In the early 1960s, while touring the “chitling circuit,” Billy encountered a young Jimi Hendrix. He gave Jimi his first stratocaster, helped him land his first serious gig, and was a close personal friend until Hendrix’s untimely death in 1970. Onstage, Billy is known for his flamboyant theatrics which were clearly an inspiration to Hendrix. Billy put out a record with A&M Records titled 'You Put Me in a Groove'. He sold over 200,000 copies in Miami, Florida between the years 1969 to 1970. The most to sell in one State in one year for that time.
Billy has recently teamed up with Christy Howard, a Detroit-based singer/songwriter whose diverse musical background, combined with her smooth and sultry vocal style, gives her a unique sound. She sings with the soul of the Gospel, the harmonies of Bluegrass, the rowdiness of a Mississippi juke-joint, and the finesse of an Austin Blues Club. Her vocals sound like a blend of June Carter Cash and Bonnie Raitt. Her original music ranges from Chicago-Style Blues and Blues-Rock, to Outlaw-Country and Southern-Rock that sounds like Buddy Guy meets Lynyrd Skynrd or Hank III. Christy draws on her long career in the seedy music business for her lyrics, which deal with cheating, mistreating, gambling, drinking, and other debauchery familiar in the Blues. Onstage, Christy is Johnny Cash reincarnated as a woman. Onstage, Billy and Christy are a dynamite team! They will rock the stage and leave their audience feeling they have truly been entertained! You are in for a real treat if you've never heard them perform live. Billy and Christy are in the process of recording a collaborative CD of high-octane Blues-Rock originals. Love the music! I saw you perform on Feb 7th in Auburn Hills and when you performed felt like it was just you, me and your Jessica in that room! Amazing, it's an honor to see someone who can play a guitar like that. Thank you!
Thanks for the add!! Will definitely keep checking for future shows - maybe a hop over the border in Toronto? I've never seen anyone play guitar "backwards" but I know a few other people who would love to see that and will drag them along next time. Take care!
