Billy the Squirrel is an acoustic song writing group that explores aspects of rock n' roll, folk, funk and bluegrass music. Shows will often be a journey of life experiences and stories told through the song writing of Mike Hannah/Billy Wassung and improvisational musical landscapes.
The music of Billy the Squirrel blends traditional acoustic music with the attitude of rock n' roll in an attempt to create a psychedelic acoustic sound.
The band recently added a full drum kit and banjo to their evolving sound. 2008 was a landmark year for the group, highlighted by their first trip to Colorado in the Spring, an epic performance at the Wakarusa Music Festival in the Summer, then a memorable Winfield Festival and a blistering run of hot Fall shows.
Billy the Squirrel has become one of the most dynamic acousic groups in the ever expanding Kansas bluegrass scene. 2009 promises to take the Squirrel across the Midwest and West as the continue to explore the limitless possibilities of "Newgrass" music.
Billy the Squirrel has performed with noteworthy artists such as Vince Herman (of Leftover Salmon), Acoustic Syndicate, Dirtfoot, Hackensaw Boys, Split Lip Rayfield, Truckstop Honeymoon, Head for the Hills, Benny Galloway and the Wayword Sons, the Dewayn Brothers, Big Smith and many more...
