BIMINI ROAD
By: Kimmie Wildey
Local alternative rock band Bimini Road is a band of “transplants” as they would tell you. An after work project turned into something more than they anticipated. Hailing from Texas and Maryland and now pumping out their sounds in Virginia Beach, Dave, Mike, Travis and Aaron are what make up Bimini Road.
The original songs that these guys have written are very funky and have unique vibe to them. Described by Zack, a long time fan, “Bimini Road is a band that fuses 2 eras of rock: classic hard rock (blues based rock) of the 60s/70s with 90s alternative. Their style is most reminiscent of the Red Hot Chili Peppers mixed with 90's grunge, 70's southern rock/hard rock, and a splash of Jimi Hendrix. Mike's bass sound mirrors that of Flea of RHCP and his vocals are a blend of David Grohl (Foo Fighters) meets Ronnie Van Zandt (Lynyrd Skynyrd). Travis is a mix of Hendrix, Frusciante (RHCP), Skynyrd, and Nowell (Sublime, who was a descendant of Hendrix). Dave's drumming brings to mind that of Carter Beauford (DMB) or Chad Sexton (311). As a band, they are really just beginning, and each new song evolves into something greater than the last”.
With influences such as Foo Fighters, Red Hot Chili Peppers, and Lynyrd Skynyard this band fills the air with the a vibrant sound. When I heard them live, opening for Chasing Corona at Capt’n Ron’s in Norfolk, I was blown away by their flawless performance. Bimini Rd.’s focus is on original songs representing their style. They are currently working on writing new songs, promoting, and finding solid shows to play. “We just want people to enjoy our music. And if they like the 2 song preview, they will LOVE what is to come!
Winning by a landslide at a recent BATTLE OF THE BANDS musical challenge sponsored by the NORVA, Bimini Road took first place. The prize was to open for Blind Melon at the NORVA. “Playing with Blind Melon was such an honor!”, says Mike of Bimini Road. “The crowd thought we were on tour with Blind Melon”. I asked them how it felt not only to win but to open in a venue such as the NORVA. ***
“We are huge supporters of local music and love the local scene”, says Bimini Rd.
Assisted by Bruce Allen of ANA music (www.bruceallenmusic.com) and Mark Padgett of Earthsound Recording Studio in Chesapeake Virginia, Bimini Road will be going into the studio in May 2008 to lay down the tracks and vocals for their upcoming full length CD. “Mark is very knowledgeable and can be described as a musical drill sergeant”, says the band. The long anticipated release date is set for late July/August 2008.
