About me:
This space has been created to provide a place where Birmingham locals who have been affected by the city's crime rate can find help and comraderie in coping with their experience. It is also intended to help Birmingham residents, as well as visitors, become more aware of what is going on in our city politically, socially, and culturally. If you have experienced an incident of personal or property crime, tell us your story. If you have any stories about police misconduct or a situation that has been mishandled by any city official, let us know. We are hoping that we can eventually use information gathered on this site to effect positive change in the city of Birmingham. We also hope to be able to provide our readers with helpful links, stories, and information for coping with a crisis as well as for general civic awareness. Thank you for your participation in this grassroots effort to help our city live up to its potential. If you are viewing this page and are not a member of myspace but would like to contact us, we can be contacted through otherpossibilities@gmail.com.

This was sent to us today.

My sister-n-law Latrisha Pruitt was murdered 11-24-07 by the father of her then 18 day old daughter which my husband (Latrisha's brother) and I are now raising. I am not really sure what you can do to help if anything at all... Also I am putting together a fund raiser/charity art show to be held at the Birmingham Museam of Art to raise money for a scholarship fund to be put in Latrisha's name at UAB for victims of domestic violence. This event will showcase art work, music, and poetry created by victims of domestic violence. Also we are in the process of creating several changes in domestic violence laws and how the public is made aware of violent offenders. These issues will be brought in front of the legislator Feb 2009. You can get more information about Latrisha case at http://www. latrishapruitt. virtual-memorials. com.

Thank you for your time...
In Latrisha's Memory,
Remember to Live Well, Laugh Often, and Love Much...

so the "hard questions" asked last night at the forum included a question about local hip hop artists? that is so telling about the priorities of this city. ironic that that particular question invoked so much audience response. awesome. what about the girl who was shot in her car the night before? was that not important enough?

Cooper is the only one with a real plan. Go Cooper!!!! If he dosen't get it then im done with Birmingham. I will be moving, this place is getting out of control and I don't feel safe anywhere in the city limits. I was robbed once at gun point and that is the last. If I have to get a gun just to feel safe in the city limits something is very broken.

so yesterday i'm chilling in five points. just enjoying a day in my city. when lo and behold i got harassed by the cops. he asked how long we 'planned' on being out there and i asked him if there was a time limit on enjoying a beautiful day in my city. at this point he recieved a personal phone call on his razor and walked off. so i guess now even ordinary citizens can't 'loiter' in southside. maybe, we should do something about crime by first doing something about the failing city schools, or the crumbling projects, or the increasing divide between the haves and the have nots. and, less about transients, loiters and other colorful characters of southside which i personally enjoy engaging in conversation. sure there is crime here and sure some of it is perpetrated by the homeless. but, i'd wager a bet that most of the crime is committed by people with homes and cars and guns. i hate being percieved as a criminal in my own neighborhood and thats how i felt yesterday.

To me, it's more discouraging to see how the police have lost their fire towards honoring their pledge to protect and serve. I was in the Chevron in Lakeview not too long ago and a policeman had parked in the handicap parking space. He was standing inside drinking coffee and when approached by a lady who asked "do you know you parked in a handicap park?", he responded "well do you need it?" I told him I had to pay $150 for parking in one. Glad you've created this site.

I have lived in an apartment in Southside across from Tantra for 8 years now and have never been as scared as I am now to live in that area. There was a shooting in the alley next to Tantra Sunday morning around 3 a.m. that resulted in a fatality. Everyone please be very careful and aware of your surroundings, this area is not what it used to be.

After a recent trip to Southside our group agreed that it would be our last trip. Way too scary down there. What a shame...it use to be so much fun! Thanks for adding me. Totally blown away about all the crime. I hear more stories every day and it just keeps getting worse and worse.
