B*tch
My name is B*tch—my mom named me that---I was a 10.5-pound Aries, what can I say?
I am happy to say that my new record, "Blasted!" is finished and ready to be released into the world next spring on my own little awesome record label, Short Story Records.
Some of you may not recognize me without my dreadlocks—it's me! The same sm-arty electric violin lady with a whole new album that is the best thing i've made yet. And i produced it myself! It's co-produced by my friend and band-mate, Gabriel K, and long-time collaborator, Wayne Schrengohst. Liz Kelly also did some production work and played her hands off on it! Lee Free came in and shook things up on the drums. Steve Fisk mixed it and the world is about to be changed!
This is a briefing on the stuff i've made that have led me to this point in my life and career:
2007—I produced and released “Boulder,” an album of one of my idols, Ferron, singing her songs the way I wanted to hear them. This was the beginning of my label, Short Story Records (shortstoryrecords.com)
2007—I produced and released an ep of my band, Bitch +The Exciting Conclusion, which rocks. (excitingconclusion.com)
2006—after two or so years working with an amazing cast, “Shortbus,” John Cameron Mitchell’s follow-up movie to “Hedwig and the Angry Inch” premiered at the Cannes film festival. I played myself, not to be confused with playing with myself. Although it was a ‘sex movie,’ my role did not include masturbating. Sorry.
2006---I released “Make This Break This” on Kill Rock Stars.
2004—I released “Be-Sides (one take wonders and poems)” while I was making “Make This Break This,” cuz it was taking so damn long. So I whipped out that record to appease myself and all my adoring fans…
2003—as Bitch and Animal, we released “Sour Juice and Rhyme” on Righteous Babe Records and toured with Ani Difranco all over the US and Europe
2001—Bitch and Animal released “Eternally Hard” on Righteous Babe Records and were carried along on many tours opening for Ani. She used to describe us as “sex positive muppets.” Hee hee
1999—Bitch and Animal released “What’s That Smell?” which unleashed the “Pussy Manifesto” into the world and the world was never the same.
What led up to all of that:
I started studying classical violin at age 4 after seeing a guy fiddling on Sesame Street.
My mom is a tap dancer and started teaching me how to tap at age 3. She always taught classes in our basement and from the earliest I remember we always had that percussive sound beaming up through the floors of our house. I think I think around rhythms.
I started writing poetry at age 11, when I suffered my first heartbreak and had to leave my best friend behind when my family moved from Pittsburgh to the suburbs of Detroit.
I have written poetry ever since, in a maniacal fashion, and have a collection of thousands of poems that sometimes become songs.
Sometime soon after the move, I wrote to Cyndi Lauper and asked her for the skirt she wore in the “True Colors” video.
I went to college for acting as a sheer act of rebellion against my classical violin training. There, I met Animal, with whom I later developed a ‘theater piece’ called Bitch and Animal.
I wanted to bust out of my uptight classical tendencies and signed up for fiddling lessons with Andrew Bird at The Old Town School of Folk Music in Chicago.
After 10 classes I shaved my head and went to hitchhike around Australia for 6 months and practiced what he taught me. When I got back, the theater piece, “Bitch and Animal” got made.
