BJ Kerwin was only 9 years old when he picked up his first set of drum
sticks. Now, at 23, he hasn’t looked back.
"I started playing because I was always around it," says Kerwin.
"Both my dad and my uncle have been professional drummers. And like
any kid who’s always around instruments, you eventually just start
banging on shit."
After picking up the drums, Kerwin tried his hand at guitar at age
12, and became hooked on music. He was soon forming bands and
moonlighting in friends’ projects left and right, recording his own
songs and playing shows all over the D.C. Metro area. He later
attended Full Sail in Orlando, Fla., to hone his recording skills and
learn the tricks and the trade of the entertainment business.
Upon returning from the muggy expanses of Florida, Kerwin hooked up
with the Niki Barr Band in early 2006 and jumped at the chance to
join on as a rhythm guitarist. However, the Band was soon in need of a
drummer, and Kerwin stepped in to fill the slot, cementing the Band’s
line-up.
"Working with Niki is fantastic," says Kerwin. "It’s always great to
work with a well-organized group of professionals who are all
committed to the same goals. She is a fantastic song writer which
makes for an interesting set to watch and play every night."
