B.J. Novak's Blog

  • New York Comedy Festival

Okay, you readers of this very sporadic blog have noticed that I rarely if ever mention a specific comedy show I'll be doing.  They're always on my calendar, but I figure I do my best at every show, so why mention one and not another?

Well, this Sunday, November 9th, I'm doing a show in New York City that I think has a very special lineup, so I want to encourage anyone in the New York City area to consider buying a ticket.  It's the closing night of the New York Comedy Festival, at Town Hall, and since the show is "B.J. Novak and Friends" I was allowed to choose the entire lineup.  Instead of choosing my best friends, though, I screwed the festival over and chose my favorite young comics who I happen to be friends with.  Ha!  Take that, festival!

    Anyway.  The great lineup includes:

    Mindy Kaling
    Dan Mintz
    John Mulaney
    Simon Rich
    Paul Rust

Hope some of you can make it.  If not, check out these comics when you can, they're all going to be big stars in a matter of minutes.

Tickets and info are at www.nycomedyfestival.com.

Aren't the songs that start with "W" generally of a higher level of excellence?
  • Standup Q & A

    Q.  What are the dates listed on your calendar?
    A. Those are standup performances.

    Q.  A lot of the shows listed on your calendar are colleges.  Are tickets available to the general public?
A: There are at least two shows this month that have tickets on sale to the general public. On Friday, February 8th I will be in Washington, D.C. to perform at historic Lisner Auditorium.  Tickets for that are available at www.lisner.org
and at Ticketmaster.  I'll also be performing Los Angeles at Largo on 2/27. Tickets for that are available at www.largo-la.com.

    Q. Is the show on 2/27 a 227 themed show?
    A. No.

    Q. Will there be much onstage interaction between the cast of The Office and the cast of 227?
A.There is expected to be no such interaction whatsoever as no one from the cast of 227 is expected to perform at or attend the show on February 27th.

    Q. Is the dude from The Jeffersons going to be there?
    A.  I think you are thinking of the show Amen, not 227. No actor from either of those two programs is expected.

    Q. Will people be signing things after the show?
    A.  Sure, if you want!

    Q.  Because I'm bringing my Office DVDs and my 227 DVDs.  My brother's birthday is coming up and I think it would be hilarious if I could get Steve Carell to sign the 227 set and get Jackeé to sign –
    A.  Let me stop you right there: there is nothing about the show on February 27th that will appeal to a fan who is specifically and primarily looking for an evening that will satisfy a nostalgia for, or an appreciation of, the sitcom 227. Again: this is not a show that is geared towards fans of 227 to any extent above or beyond what would simply be considered a general targeting of comedy fans.

    Q.  If Jackeé shows up, will you let her in?
    A. If Jackeé makes a dinner reservation at largo-la.com she can have her own table. Otherwise, she is welcome to get in line for standing room at around 8:30.

    Q.  No special treatement for Jackee?  On 2/27?  Boy, have you lost your mind?!
    A. You might be better off doing something else on 2/27.

    Q. Will I be able to get out of the show on 2/27 in time to keep my appointment with my Chinese dentist on 2/30?  It's a very painful root canal and my doctor speaks heavily accented English.  It's more or less all I can think about.
    A. There is no such date. Still, I am sorry to hear about that.
