Let's get one thing straight. There is no such thing as a vicious dog breed. The truth is that ANY breed of dog, big or small, can develop aggression. Aggression is a symptom of an unsatisfied dog; a dog whose life is not being fulfilled. Some breeds, including pit bulls, Rottweilers, and German Shepherds, are more powerful than other breeds, so if they become aggressive, they can almost always do much more damage. Smaller dogs, like Chihuahuas, can often be defensive when fearful or nervous. You would be a little surly too if you were constantly being treated like a purse! But when dogs of all shapes, sizes, and breeds are treated and cared for properly, they have the potential to be calm and balanced pets.
Your dog's bad behavior is not funny. If your dog is aggressive or fearful with people or other dogs, it's definitely no laughing matter. In fact, if you laugh off a bad behavior, you may be reinforcing her actions.
Remember, your energy is a trigger for your dog. If you're projecting a type of fun, positive energy while she's misbehaving, she's going to think it's okay.
The body language of an over-protective dog can often escalate into the dangerous red zone. When I saw her, her ears were forward, eyes fixated, mouth closed, and body poised in a kind of hunting ready to attack mode. It was predatory stance; ready to charge.
It's so important to be able to read your dog's body language. You'll see with aggressive dogs that they will often display trigger signs before reaching that dangerous state. If you know what to look for, you can block or redirect that escalating behavior or snap them out of it.
For example, with less aggressive cases, you can throw a ball to redirect her attention or use quick phrases such as, Come on, come on, come on! In more serious cases, you will need to block and use more assertive commands such as No or Stay.
Remember, no matter what you do, you must remain calm and assertive. Frustration, fear, anger, or anxiety will only reinforce unwanted behavior in an uncontrollable and unbalanced dog.
