Bryan 27 miles on the trainer tonight...I feel good, but yuk! Posted at 4:11 AM Nov 17 view more
About me: My name is Bryan Kortness and I am a 41 year old Type 1 diabetic. Obviously like every other diabetic, the disease plays a major part in every aspect of my life but due to exercise and education, I keep it under control. Over the last 3+ years, my A1C's have ranged between 6.1 and 6.8.
My wife Leslie and I have been married for 12 years now and we have a wonderful 3 year old daughter named Teagan. When we found out that we were going to have a child, I really decided that I wanted the quality of my life to be as good as it could be so I took up bicycling and I have not looked back since. My first year of riding, I rode 4300 miles, in 2007 I ended up riding 5200 miles and in 2008 I rode 4200 miles. All these miles have given me an idea that I could use my bicycling skills and knowledge to help other diabetics live long healthy lives. I have recently joined the Adventures for the Cure bicycle racing team. The team formed to raise awareness for Diabetes, to show those diagnosed with Diabetes and their families how leading a healthy and active lifestyle can move you beyond your perceived limits, and to raise funds for Diabetes research. If you would like more information on the team you can check them out at http://www.adventuresforthecure.com/
My goals in the upcoming years are to become an educator in the diabetes field helping children as well as their parents find the easiest and healthiest ways to live with diabetes.
In the meantime, I manage a jewelry store in Nashville, work part-time as a bicycle safety instructor for Walk Bike Nashville...a non-profit organization that promotes bicycling and walking in the Nashville area as a form of exercise as well as transportation, and I am also a recent graduate of the United Bicycle Institute's Professional Shop Operation and Repair School which gave me a certification as a professional bicycle mechanic.
If anyone is interested in the bicycling community in Nashville, I work with and communicate with many of the bicycle clubs in the area so feel free to email me any questions and I will do my best to answer them.
Who I'd like to meet: Anyone with a sense of adventure and fun! Leslie, Teagan and I are always willing to hang out with people who are fun-loving, generous, open and looking to try new things out...especially outdoor activities. We have consistently reinvented ourselves every few years, trying new things out and we believe that has kept us young looking as well as young at heart. If you are a similar type of spirit...feel free to add us to your friends list!
We are always looking for new bicycle riding partners of all talent levels so please email me if you are looking for someone to ride with or have a route that you think is really fun to ride!
Hey you!!! It's been forever and a day...again!!! LOL. I've been stuck in the wonderful world of FB these days. Just wanted to send you a huge hello. :) How are things going for you three? Hugs N kisses!!!!
Great to have you as a friend, Bryan. I just did the Tour de Cure for the first time, and I loved it. I plan on doing it again next year, only I will do the 68 mile ride.
Keep pedaling and enjoying life. It's well worth living, regardless.
Hey Bryan! Hope all's well back in Nashvegas.. Not sure what's up, but the bottom half of my top friends has been cut off! What the! I smell alcohol...
Dude!!! I love that pic! I want a poster of that over my toilet! Motivation!!! To concentrate...and push! Wouldn't want to keel over and die there. Like The King did. ;)
