Skinned Thick
The streets of Belfast are layered with a thick oily grime that’s been there since the 1960s.
It is impenetrable and as resistant to change as the city itself. It doesn’t want to be your friend and it won’t look you in the eye.
Primetime Belfast radio shows pump out hour after hour of rants and arguments, stage-managed and fuelled by overpaid, overweight and overrated presenters.
Conflict, our national pastime, is now presented as entertainment, set to a 1960s pretend Country and Western soundtrack.
Do not switch on your television to escape it, for our programmes are bland, infantile, amateurish productions of entirely predictable monotony.
We are the reaction.
Where there is no scene, no soul and no culture, any remedy becomes extremely potent.
Welcome to Belfast. Don’t drink the water.
