Ever so often an artist comes along who just blows you away. Having developed a style which is uniquely his own. Baring inspiration from such greats as Ray Charls, Nina Simone, Tuck Andreas, Aretha Franklin, Lauryn Hill, Billie Holiday and the list goes on. BlackBird began performing as a solo artist in the hard streets of Newark, New Jersey. Gaining the respect of his peers in freestyle competitions, BlackBirds first desire was to be a hip-hop artist, not yet having found the confidence or strength within to follow his ultimate passion of singing. It was through the influence of Halliem Sulliman that BlackBird teamed up with another budding star by the name of Saleema Williams. Together they formed the hip hop duo Saleema & Aqeel, having recorded several tracks (some of which are available for listening via this page), and performed all over the tristate area. The duo decided to take a break once BlackBird completed high school and he later moved to New York City. BlackBird began to create quite a buzz in the New York Performance circuit having gained the admiration of such artist as Baron, Sparlha Swa, Elijah Starr, PurpleHaze, and QueenGodIS. BlackBird toured as a vocalist and guitarist within QueenGodIs's band for most of 2007. It was in 2008 that he began to deeply aspire to work on his own project. Though not yet complete you can here some very early influences from this great artist on the track " So Free" which is available on this page. BlackBird set out on a small but very successful sold outNew York City tour with hip hop artist Purple Haze, and shortly after began assisting Baron with minor production of his album Celebrity, as well as contributing background vocals, as well as a feature on the song " Throw It On Me". BlackBird is currently not recording or performing... currently. Though he assures his friends, peers, and those who admire and respect both him and his music that he " WILL GET BACK TO IT". p.s.
