My legendary love Peter, the observation of things often overlooked, swinging deftly between decadence and simplicity, wild and hidden places, delicious vegan food, acupuncture, sipping cocktails prepared by good friends, hooping until I'm delirious, rough winds, the sea, dreams and nightmares, myths and folktales, beauty, things that inspire obsessive bouts of creativity, curios, acupuncture, treasure hunts, full moons, high tea, bromeliads, and exploring the ever expanding corridors of my own imagination.
Understand, I'll slip quietly
away from the noisy crowd
when I see the pale
stars rising, blooming, over the oaks.
I'll pursue solitary pathways
through the pale twilit meadows,
with only this one dream:
You come too.
— Rainer Maria Rilke (1875 – 1926)
“War is over...if you want it.” Peace is created within the heart, and freedom is realized in the imagination.
Music
Tori Amos, Radiohead, Rasputina, Patrick Wolf, Muse, Bjork, the Cure, Nin Inch Nails, the Faint, the Decemberists, the Dresden Dolls, Belle & Sebastion, Jeff Buckley, Cocorosie, Faun Fables, Mia Doi Todd, Bat for Lashes, Michael Franti, Portishead, Antony and the Johnsons, Jesca Hoop, Geneva, Pulp, Gorillaz, Loreena Mckennitt, Goldfrapp, Rufus Wainwright, Dead Can Dance, Simon and Garfunkle, Donovan, Suede, Autumn's Grey Solace, Nick Drake, the Verve, Siouxie, Edith Piaf, the Cocteau Twins, Vashti Bunyan, Burl Ives, David Bowie, Pulp, Magnet, etc. Anything moody and dramatic, ethereal gothic, experimental folk, indie rock, and British invasion. I love dancing at clubs or throughout my house. I also like to make up my own silly songs which generally rhyme and tend to embarrass.
Movies
Tim Burton, Hayao Miyazaki, classic Walt Disney, Jim Henson, Silent movies (especially starring Buster Keaton, Colleen Moore or Clara Bow)...I enjoy whimsy and dark humor. Anything done in stop-motion animation. Also horror movies in the classic style (i.e. the 1963 version of The Haunting)...not the slasher film formula. Some other favorites include: the Science of Sleep, Sunset Boulevard, Dark City, Donnie Darko, The 5th Element, The Wizard of Oz, What's Eating Gilbert Grape, Empire Records, The Never Ending Story, The Green Mile, Tank Girl, The Goonies, The Breakfast Club, Dead Poets Society, Gentlemen Prefer Blondes, The Last Unicorn, Trainspotting (watched on my first date with Peter), The Royal Tenenbaums, Pippi Longstocking on the Seven Seas, Pecker, Babe, Benny & Joon, A Series of Unfortunate Events, Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas, Moulin Rouge.
Television
Ghosthunters, the Daily Show, the Colbert Report, Fosters Home for Imaginary Friends, reruns of the Adams Family and Twilight Zone, nature/science shows, and random trash TV.
Books
Poetry of Rainer Maria Rilke, Pablo Neruda, Edgar Alan Poe, Charles Baudelaire, Arthur Rimbaud, W.B. Yeats, Percy Bysshe Shelley, Walt Whitman, Wendell Berry. I love children's books filled with lavish illustrations, the dark humor of Roald Dahl, Lewis Carroll, the Brothers Grimm, the philosophy of Michael Ende, pop-up books of all sorts, the Brian Froud faerie books, Edward Gorey, J.M. Barrie, Neil Gaiman. Also books on spirituality, mythology, culture, history, folklore, superstitions, acupuncture & oriental medicine, field guides, and almanacs.
And here is a book I myself illustrated for Acorn Guild Press...I currently have a children's book called The Lion Ghost in progress as well.
Heroes
Amelia Earhart, Ben Franklin, Saint Theresa of Avila, Ghandi, Hypatia, Edgar Alan Poe, Jim Henson, John Muir...too many to list who inspire and enthrall.
I confess I'm on a bit of a slow down right now as I focus on my studies in Acupuncture and Oriental Medicine. No worries...I am still creating new paintings all the time. But unfortunately I haven't had the extra time to find shows to take part in, or carry on all of that self-marketing mayhem. My work is viewable on my website www.blackbirdflying.net, and here of course. If you do desire to view something in the 3-D world just send me a message.
And if you'd like to send an e-card featuring my artwork click on the little birdy below...he will fly you to Pagan Poet E-cards...then just click on Heather Lloyd.
According to ancient myth, the blackbird serves as messenger and guide between the worlds of dreams and waking thoughts, memories and secret spaces. At the twilight hour, the blackbird's song is heard at the gateway between the realm of the living and the dead...enchanted music that lulls the conscious mind to sleep, and awakens the hidden self.
Within this liminal space, all stories are born, and new worlds are continually created. I think of myself as a storyteller, weaving tales of dark whimsy with paint, ink, wood, scraps of paper, and bits snipped from forgotten old books. I create with wood, rather than canvas, because it was once alive, and still holds onto memories of the forest. All the best fairy tales begin with a child gone wandering into the wildwood, encountering strange creatures and enchanted passages.
My compositions are sifted from dreams, (both the night and daytime sorts). And my creative process is akin to a medium's trace. I believe that every piece of art exists fully as a living spirit before the first line is ever laid down, and so I allow that spirit to move through me, rather than attempting to control the outcome. There are no mistakes, only twists and bends that lead the story into places wholly unexpected.
I also believe that inspiration is passed between people like a stolen kiss, and is always moving and flowing like a current of air, or water, or electricity. It is my hope is to inspire others to be creative, and to listen to the low whispers of their dreams. I desire to “bring beauty back in season” and end the tyranny of literal thinking. Life is poetry. The world is whatever you imagine it to be...nightmare or delicate fantasy.
Who I'd like to meet:
Dreamers and their dreams...brooding romantics of all sorts.
The amazing Katrina Parker...the soundtrack of my art
This site has the most amazing jewelry for those, like myself, who love pirates and spiders and snakes. Beautiful.
And this site has the BEST candles ever...scents like poison apple and vlad are just too yummy.
The "Top Friends" list is crammed with people and places which inspire me...
