Blackbirds For Lunch are a bouncy band from Birmingham that performs around the Birmingham area, with regular gigs at the Chestnut tree in Sheldon. The band is a five-piece, a traditional rock line up of 1 singer, 1 guitarist/singer, 1 guitarist, 1 bassist and 1 drummer. Despite this clichéd image, Blackbirds For Lunch are anything but traditional. They play a varied mixture of styles including cover versions of classic 60..s pop songs through to modern day ska, from punk rock to ballads. Blackbirds are very much the crowd..s band, as their music will appeal to everyone, ranging from the school kids to grannies and everything in between.
Blackbirds For Lunch were founded by Ian, the lead guitarist/vocalist, at some point in 2004. Previous to this, there were various incarnations of the band in the form of high school bands called ..Wailing Kipper.. and ..Normal Wisdom... Alas, these bands did not work out due to clashing music tastes, members leaving and general teenage strops. After a little maturation period away from school and realising these bands weren't.. working, Ian decided to draft a band that contained members that were dedicated to music and performing. After many months pass, various guitarists come and go (along with some bassists and drummers too), rifts with members finally resolved and the focus firmly back on the music, the current line up is born. Singing for the band currently is Janan, aka JJ, who at 17 is the young and cute one of the band. On guitar and vocals is Ian, aka Pasty, and is very much the leader of the band, very organised, very efficient and fun too (and only original remaining member of Blackbirds For Lunch). On guitar is Adam, who can only be described as old school (if you meet him, you..ll find out why pretty quick). On bass is Connor he is the youngest at 16, he has amazing hands not that it has anything to do with the band! Finally, on drums is Charlotte she is the newest member of the band.
Take their broad musical taste and add an energetic frontline, and you get Blackbirds For Lunch. This energy that the band seems to have when on stage is very much fuelled by their love for the music they are playing and sugar based refreshments. Both Ian, Adam and Connor seem never to be content with standing still mid performance, so are often found jumping/dancing/running about the stage in time to the music. JJ always adds her feminine quality to the performances and regularly gives a little dance herself.Charlotte as a drummer funnily enough skilfully adds the heartbeat of the band.
Blackbirds For Lunch have their sights set big, as they would love to be performing up and down the country, spreading the fun and exhilaration that every gig brings to the nation. oh and then theres shelley the brains behind the band! shes the one who sorts out the myspace and promotes the band and mingles with the fans at gigs!
