BIO MARLON SIMON :
Batteur, percussionniste d’origine Vénézuélienne, aîné d’une fratrie de trois musiciens, Marlon Simon s’installe à New York en 1988, puis Philadelphie où il vit actuellement. Pendant les 8 années de son séjour New Yorkais, il accompagne entre autre Paquito de Riveira, Dave Valentin, Bobby Watson, remplace Steve Berrios au sein du fort Apaché Band puis devient le batteur attitré du trio regretté pianiste Hilton Ruiz avec lequel il tourne pendant une dizaine d’années.
En marge de sa carrière de sideman, il crée le sextet de latin jazz Nagual Spirit pour lequel il compose et où l’on retrouve (entre autres) ses deux frères :
Michael (trompette) et Edward pianiste renommé, entendu auprès de John Patitucci, Terence Blanchard (pendant 8 ans), Bobby Watson, Manny Oquendo, Ignacio Berroa.
Marlon Simon réalise 4 albums avec Nagual Spirit dont le dernier « in case you missed it » vient d’être nommé aux Jazz Heads 2007 ( Grammy Awards) catégorie latin jazz.

Cet album est autoproduit par l’Association Chantilly Negra avec les soutiens du Conseil Régional d’Auvergne, Conseil Génral du Puy de Dôme et de la Ville de Clermont Ferrand.
Le visuel de l’album à été réalisé par Stéphanie Vaillat avec un clin d’oeil aux formats vintage des années Blue Note. Les photos sont de Philippe Martin.
L'album est fabriqué en Digipack avec livret intérieur 4 pages.

En 2008, BLACK CHANTILLY & MARLON SIMON remportent le French American Jazz Exchange. Dans ce cadre le groupe s'envole pour une tournée aux Etats Unis en septembre 08 (Washington, Baltimore, Philadelphie).
En parallèle à cette actualité, le FRENCH LATIN PROJECT sort son premier album avec Marlon Simon "Afrocuban and live" dont vous pouvez écouter quelques extraits sur cette page.
Black Chantilly et Marlon Simon travaillent désormais à un nouveau projet autour des musiques tradionnelles Centre France et du Vénézuéla. Pour ce projet en cours d'écriture le sextet deviendra un septet avec l'arrivée du Vielliste Gilles Chabenat. Gilles est l'un des grands spécialistes de la Vielle, connu et reconnu pour en avoir considérablement élargi l'horizon au delà du répertoire traditionnel. Ses collaborations avec JJ Padovani, Roger Ewando, I Muvrini, Gabriel Yacoub ou Steiphan Eicher en sont l'illustration. Ce projet est d'autant plus innovant que ces deux cultures "si loin si proches' n'ont jamais été associées au sein d'une même musique.

Black Chantilly is known as one of the rare French groups to have made a name in the field of Latin jazz throughout a repertoire of original compositions.
After 12 years, 3 albums distributed in France, and noticeable concerts in various French and European festivals (such as Nice Jazz Festival, JVC Jazz festival de Paris, Nancy Jazz Pulsations, Montreux, Jazz en Tête, etc.), Black Chantilly heads the bill with the most famous artists of the style: Omar Sosa, Orlando Maraca Valle, Orquesta Aragon, Roy Hargrove Crisol latin jazz Band, Tania Maria, etc.
Black Chantilly innovates with an original collaboration in Latin Jazz universe with Marlon Simon (percussionist from Philadelphia, leader of Nagual Spirit group) whose last album was nominated at the Jazz heads Grammy Awards 2008.
Marc Glomeau (congas), Dominique Rieux (trumpet bugle), Laurent Audinos (saxophone), Frédéric Breton (piano), Frédéric Bidou (bass), all of them experimented professional musicians play with Marlon Simon for this new project, with whom they won le First Award of French American Jazz Exchange 2008.
This prize, of 10 000 dollars, will allow the group to go to the US for several concerts, among them, September 17th 2008 at the Auditorium of the French Embassy of Washington.
It’s in 2005 that the project was born, under the initiative of the percussionist Marc Glomeau, and with the help of different national and regional French cultural associations and institutions.
That’s how Black Chantilly and Marlon Simon’s Fortnight stay in France was paid for.
This period has seen a real group coming up, gathered around the original compositions of Marlon Simon.
Between 2006 and 2007, the sextet gives about twenty concerts in France in Festivals and clubs (Sunset in Paris, Jazz Festival in Montauban, Carcassonne, Jazz au fil du Cher, Jazz Auvergne Festival, etc.).
That’s when the group recorded a live album that should come out in October 2008.
