ABOUT BLACK MUSTANG

Black Mustang have just released release their debut LP, “Between the devil and the Deep Blue Sea” and are heading up & down the east coast of Australia to promote the release.

The release follows a run of east coast shows supporting some of Australia’s front runners, British India, Celibate Rifles, the Fumes, 67 Special and The Exploders amongst others.

Black Mustang took time out in early 2008 to focus on writing and rehearsing tracks for their new album, which see’s the band progress to a darker and more mature sound while maintaining their instinctive pop sensibilities from their self titled 2007 release.

The recording has recieved airplay on 4ZzZ, FBI, RRR, PBS, Nova & Triple J. With tracks off the new album having already been lifted for major worldwide licensing deals throughout USA and Australia, “Between the Devil & The Deep Blue Sea” is set to accelerate the momentum built from their debut release.

With the first Album reviews rolling in today here’s a snippet of what is being said.

CD BABY

5/5 stars

Oh, the rock of it all. This Brisbane four-piece harnesses the polished grit of glam rock so effectively, you start to feel sorry for the sweat trying to seep through their leathers. Both relentless and surprisingly urbane, the throttling charge of the chaotic guitars is held in check by spot-on backing vocals, steady-hurtling beats, and lyrics that draw inspiration from the most wanton of urges. Even when they slow it down a bit (the sinister "2AM"), there's an underlying momentum that eventually leads to brash explosions, and the force behind the inevitable crash is a worthwhile payoff. It's tough to replicate the energy of a live show in the studio, but the production on this one is impressive, capturing the group's distilled energy and channeling it into tangible sonic showmanship. If you could hear the sound of a couple guitar players kicking their boots up and out in unison, this would be it.

Time Off Magazine

4/5 stars

“Between The Devil And The Deep Blue Sea is a blistering affair that displays loud and proud all the things that are so damn good about Black Mustang; big walls of guitar, chaotically annihilating drums and gloriously infectious, air-fisting anthems”

Rave Magazine

3.5/5 stars

Tried and true rock moves prove their point yet again Lots of bands today (we don’t need to name them) have made no secret of their preference for the sheer drive and gutsiness of old-school rock. From the dungeons of Detroit to Aussie pub-rock, the template was laid down years before any of them was born. That the formula has changed so little and yet still sounds so natural in the hands of these young guns must say something for the enduring resilience of guitars turned up to cranky. Now Brisbane four-piece Black Mustang throw down their own take on it. They’ve acknowledged before that they are rock tragics and it sure shows on this debut album, virtually advertising their intentions in cuts like Back To The Future. They lay down a familiar barrage of no-nonsense guitar rock in a way that both instantaneously identifi es their decades-old influences and serves notice that they’re not captive to them. You’d think we’d be over this kind of rampant retro-revelling, but from the Iggy-style stomp of You & I and the beery, bluesy 2 AM to the glam inclinations of The One, Black Mustang proves that the search for high energy, no-frills teenage kicks isn’t about to go out of fashion.

Tsuanami Magazine

9/10 stars

Every time a great album comes out of Brisbane it swells my heart with pride. Being a big advocator of the amazing talent we have sitting right here in our capital city, I can joyfully say Black Mustang have risen to the occasion. A true rock ’n’ roll vibe is entirely evident on ‘Between The Devil And The Deep Blue Sea’ and, if you close your eyes while listening, you can almost smell stale beer and feel the floor moving in time to the rhythm. I seriously wouldn’t be surprised if we were to see these boys at the ARIA’s next year. In fact, I would put money on it (Jenliza).

The Dwarf

There's nothing like a good bit of rock to get your day started right. And Brisbane outfit Black Mustang deliver with their loud, racous debut Between the Devil and the Deep Blue Sea. Already a favourite on the Brissy gig scene, Black Mustang are winning even more fans with their energetic shows. After listening to this, I'm going to have to get myself along to a show and check them out. This is simple, unadulterated rock- big guitars, driving drums and banging riffs. It all starts off at a blistering pace with You & I, which will have you jumping around singing "gonna make you mine",and the pace doesn't let up a great deal from there. Jimmy has a great beat, and an old school rock quality to it. It's about a touch of murder and mayhem and love gone wrong, but you're smiling while you're singing about it. It was my favourite song on the album. They slow the momentum down temporarily for 2AM. And there's an interesting little instrumental hidden at the end. As much as I loved their debut, there is room for improvement and I feel these guys can only get better as they grow as a band. There may be deviations in pace, but not much in their overall sound and style which can get a little predictable and cliched. I found the general sound of the album felt a little flat at times, and although its full of good songs, I didn't feel there were any jumping at me screaming great. Some bands develop their own style and sound. Black Mustang have yet to break away from the expected sound of a rock band and forge their own, but I'm hoping they do. But its still a great debut, and will definately be getting some airtime on my stereo.

Black Mustang- It's loud, it's fun and it's guaranteed to have you jumping around.

Enjoy.....
