About me:
  Hey all

Rufus here on a fast train with a quick minute to write down a little idea that's been swimming around in my head for a couple of weeks. Recently we were all treated to a pretty dire prognosis of the Earth's general health by some UN committee made up of smart people. Maybe it's because I haven't been watching a lot of TV and I'm not as zoned out by the news, or around that time I had a particularly intense reflexology session that got some juices flowing, or that I finally actually care? Anyway, after that tragic announcement I realized that I must do something.

A while ago my friend Antony sent out a mass email with similar concerns asking for opinions or just thoughts about the whole environmental situation. I found this very energizing and since then I have been giving the question a lot of thought.

My initial reaction and lingering feeling is that no government, corporation or celebrity is going to do the trick. Basically, all the money in the world can't really solve this problem. In fact, I think it only makes things worse. IT HAS TO BE A GRASS ROOTS MOVEMENT!!! I could get into a whole analysis of my various lay theories but frankly I hate writing emails and want to get down to brass tacks, so here's my pitch:

I LOVED THE NEW YORK POWER OUTAGE!!!!! I found it incredibly invigorating, spiritual and practical at the same time: we all had to pay attention to each other! Not to mention that Manhattan in total darkness was oddly enough a beautiful sight to behold.

I propose this: on a Saturday around the summer solstice (June 21st) for a 12 hour period (noon to midnight) wherever you are, let's all turn off the power at the same time, ie: lights, TV, phones, fridges, etc... Anything you possibly can do without for FOR 12 HOURS. This time could be spent contemplating alone or with friends on the coming year and what personally one can do to save the planet. And at the end of the day, as darkness rolls in, a candle is lit and a list is made of all the things we can do that year to help the environment. The list could look like this:

    *recycle
*dry my clothes on a line
    *buy a hybrid
    *go vegan
    *etc...

It could be anything you feel capable of doing on a personal level. When the list is completed, get a magnet and put it on the fridge for the whole year. Then during the next summer solstice, repeat the 12 hour "black out sabbath," thus reviewing the list and making a new one for the coming year. The eventual goal in my mind is for New York (or any other town) to have a full voluntary black out one day for the shear beauty of it.

That's all for now, please get back to me with your thoughts.

I'm really looking forward to doing my bit: setting up a chair and bed sheet tent and camping out in the livingroom, reading by the light of a candle, hearing my beloved's voice clear and unaccompanied by the cicada like background whirr of the fridge.
Working to make a difference never seemed so simple and sweet.

I hope lots of people get involved.
Good Sabbath/Solstice to you all.

hello all,

So, I have been invited to a graduation party on 6/21. It is for my godchild who is graduating with honors, so I must attend. And for about two minutes I contemplated not going because I would have to be untrue to the Blackout Sabbath. But, my heart assured me that the intent of this event is a caring one, and guilt should never be a motivating factor, because I am always left unsatisfied.

So what to do, what to dooo? Easy! At the party I will not use throw away utensils, plates, cups, etc. I will wear my blackout sabbath t-shirt. I will recycle all gift wrap, beer bottles, water bottles, and such. I will not turn on any lights, I will bring a cooler full of ice so I don't have to open the fridge.

Most importantly, I will love my family, celebrate my niece's success, and when I return home, no electricity shall I use, and I will write my list in the morning by sunlight.

I sent these tips just in case others find themselves in a similar predicament.

peace to all!

ohhh... sillyness - love it...
I don't know if this is really the place but i wanted to say thanks for the awesome concert in SBarbara. Hope you like the blue scarf. Its a little shorter than the green one i made ya in Ventura, and I apologize for not being more coherent upon its delivery. I was just too amped up from the music and good cheer of the evening.
I think i'll be holed up in my room, reading for most of the day on the 21st, or maybe i'll go explore on my bike... we'll see.
Thanks for the lovely idea of BOS, and good things for ya always! :)

Love the thought behind this. I just hope someone are willing to join me for twelve hours without electricity.. Shouldn't be that hard :) Apart from the fact that we have to do without music (not everyone can make their own, you know).

Mar 25 2008 1:58 PM

Hi Rufus! Hi Everyone!
Congratulations for the idea.
I think that all the planet MUST DO SOMETHING!. The wars, the hunger and the future of our environment are the most important problems of our era and EVERYBODY MUST DO SOMETHING!

Here, in my lovely country called Spain, the climate change is more than noticeable. There's less and less rain every year, but the sun still shines continously, and that makes hot februarys and desertification.

Think of all the animal and vegetal species all over the world that won't survive to all the effects that we, careless human beings, are causing...

I think I mus join Greenpeace or something...

Bon courage to Rufus and everyone who cares!!! and lots of love too :)
Sylvain

Fast trains instead planes are an ecological solution. North America is far behind Europe and Japan.
