About me:
Hey all

Rufus here on a fast train with a quick minute to write down a little idea that's been swimming around in my head for a couple of weeks. Recently we were all treated to a pretty dire prognosis of the Earth's general health by some UN committee made up of smart people. Maybe it's because I haven't been watching a lot of TV and I'm not as zoned out by the news, or around that time I had a particularly intense reflexology session that got some juices flowing, or that I finally actually care? Anyway, after that tragic announcement I realized that I must do something.

A while ago my friend Antony sent out a mass email with similar concerns asking for opinions or just thoughts about the whole environmental situation. I found this very energizing and since then I have been giving the question a lot of thought.

My initial reaction and lingering feeling is that no government, corporation or celebrity is going to do the trick. Basically, all the money in the world can't really solve this problem. In fact, I think it only makes things worse. IT HAS TO BE A GRASS ROOTS MOVEMENT!!! I could get into a whole analysis of my various lay theories but frankly I hate writing emails and want to get down to brass tacks, so here's my pitch:

I LOVED THE NEW YORK POWER OUTAGE!!!!! I found it incredibly invigorating, spiritual and practical at the same time: we all had to pay attention to each other! Not to mention that Manhattan in total darkness was oddly enough a beautiful sight to behold.

I propose this: on a Saturday around the summer solstice (June 21st) for a 12 hour period (noon to midnight) wherever you are, let's all turn off the power at the same time, ie: lights, TV, phones, fridges, etc... Anything you possibly can do without for FOR 12 HOURS. This time could be spent contemplating alone or with friends on the coming year and what personally one can do to save the planet. And at the end of the day, as darkness rolls in, a candle is lit and a list is made of all the things we can do that year to help the environment. The list could look like this:

*recycle
*dry my clothes on a line
*buy a hybrid
*go vegan
*etc...

It could be anything you feel capable of doing on a personal level. When the list is completed, get a magnet and put it on the fridge for the whole year. Then during the next summer solstice, repeat the 12 hour "black out sabbath," thus reviewing the list and making a new one for the coming year. The eventual goal in my mind is for New York (or any other town) to have a full voluntary black out one day for the shear beauty of it.

That's all for now, please get back to me with your thoughts.

Love Rufus Wainwright

hi Rufus! I'm not going to be able to do the sabbath in June since 1)I live in the desert. It gets VERY hot in June 2)my dad and I both take Lithium, which makes you sweat extra when it's hot. So if we did celebrate, we'd have to cheat and put the AC on.

reply to Kristenann: the world in fact IS in danger. There are many solid facts that global warming exists, whether it's natural toxins or the smelly gas guzzling SUVS we drive polluting the air, it's completely irresponsable to tell people everything's fine, when the polar caps are melting and many penguins are becoming endangered species. God forbid we should take one 12 day to not use energy or welcome natural energy sources like hybrid cars and those windmills.

Ello Love,
I am determined to do this this year. Last year was a failed attempt because the men in my family just HAD to watch a soccer game, think it was the world cup?
Oh well, No worries. This year IT WILL be done, rest assure. What's more, i can actually go to the blackoutsabbath show this year too! hurrah!
See you there!

Thanks Rufus. We observed Blackoutsabbath and dutifully made our lists of ways we could conserve energy. We just got our electricity bill with a useful graph proving that we have used 38% less energy than the same period last year.
We are saving the planet and saving our money too!!!

Hi Rufus. OBAMA WON YAY!!!

I cleaned my fridge out the other day. I've been drink this Acai berry juice. They are these berries from Brazil and they have supposedly the highest amount of antioxidents than any other food.

So you and everyone else in this community should try them

I hope you and you family and friends are healthy and happy.

you're faithful fan of 10 years,
Mirthy

I'm really looking forward to doing my bit: setting up a chair and bed sheet tent and camping out in the livingroom, reading by the light of a candle, hearing my beloved's voice clear and unaccompanied by the cicada like background whirr of the fridge.
Working to make a difference never seemed so simple and sweet.

I hope lots of people get involved.
Good Sabbath/Solstice to you all.
