Jamie and Andrew met years ago at JSC, specifically at the radio station,
where Andrew's pseudonym was dangerboy and Jamie's was Police Woman. Years
later, Andrew ran into Ivan FleshHammer, & Ivan handed Andrew a flyer for A9 studio.
Andrew's then band, Cheetah Mars (a folk outfit with upright bass) decided to record an album there.
We made the album, the band broke up, and Jamie went off to college. While he was away,
he and Andrew corresponded quite a bit. Then, Jamie moved back, and Andrew moved in with
Jamie & his menagerie.
Many cans of coke and unnecessary text messages later, they decided to collaborate
musically.
Jamie knew this guy named Mac from high school. In July 2005, the 3 joined forces and named themselves
Black Shabbas.
At first Black Shabbas was considered a temporary name. During the year that followed, we
careened thru a scribbly list of would-be monikers that met largely with shrugs and groans:
Dirty Diaper and the Wipes; Asterisk and Ampersand (*&&); We Speak Your Names; 14 In Arkansas; Kentucky Jelly; Cloud City Boys, The Corner Solution, and others
not worth mentioning here... but we finally agreed to Black Shabbas. ..For a while.
We played a few shows under the name Black Shabbas, but continued to puzzle over the name. In January of 2007, a trip to Al's French Fries found us discussing the matter in earnest, and our ketchup-and-vinegar soaked ponderings (which were all caught on videotape) birthed the proverbial over-the-head lightbulb that is Mac Dates and the Moderates (see blog for excessive, though arguably apt, analysis of the new name).
In Spring 2007, devil J joined the ranks on second guitar. with devil J on the force, we have a much easier time calculating the following band statistics:
% of Moderates who have been to jail: 50%
% of Moderates who have been tattooed (outside of jail): 100%
% of Moderates who have fathered children: 50%
% of Moderates who smoke cigarettes (but not near children): 50%
