  • Bio

heavy, sludgy, loud music from denver, colorado played by 4 dudes who like beer, metal, records and riffs. Black Sleep of Kali - Black Sleep of Kali (demo) Review by John Pegoraro (StonerRock.com) Self Released Release date: 2009 .. I've been comparing bands to the likes of Sabbath, Kyuss, and Monster Magnet (among others) for so long, it's refreshing to say that Black Sleep of Kali instead sounds like Torche. And hell, it's refreshing to listen to the Colorado four-piece. They may be indebted to Steve Brooks and Co., but never to the point where they cross the line to "shamelessly derivative." Opener "Chorus of Flies" is the best of the five tracks on this demo EP – it's got a massively buoyant rhythm that makes one feel really happy about the end of days. "Cries of the Crow," "Age of Iron," "Cyclical Tides," and "Broken Crowns" don't quite capture the same energy but they're still plenty effective. The band does a great job at mixing dark, heavy riffs with lighter, almost sing-a-long worthy melodies. Is it good time doom? Optimistic sludge? Who cares. I like it well enough to recommend it (and best of all, it's free)..... Review from Westword: .. By Tom Murphy Published on September 29, 2009 at 1:46pm .. Tracing the lineage that Black Sleep of Kali evokes on this record isn't all that difficult. Listen closely and there's some of that hard-edged sludginess of Black Sabbath, the razory psychedelia and inexorable sway of Sleep and the progressive drive of Isis across these five songs. But Kali makes it all sound and feel like a group of hardcore kids trying to do something more imaginative and dynamic than merely applying loud, fast rules. Indeed, these songs are on a larger conceptual arc than mere decades of oppression, as evidenced by titles like "Age of Iron" and "Cyclical Tides." Through all of the songs are deserving experiments in songwriting, "Cries of the Crow" is the album's high point, wherein Kali creates a hypnotic epic worthy of its musical heroes. ..
