Amidst the jonesing junkies of Hells Kitchen, via the mad streets of Manila and inside the underbelly of Jersey City, John Ariz
(guitar), Micah Valdes (vocals), Joel Bernardo (bass),
Steve Canarelli (guitar) and Riley Sumala (drums)
crossed creative paths. After the demise of their
previous hardcore, dub & pop bands Merel (Gern
Blandsten), C.A.F and Youngster,
BlackSonny was born. The result was a
blend of 60's Brit pop vocals, bass riffs that bait
and hook, drums driven by a focused aggression
infected with nasty breaks, and finally a pairing of
ballsy angular rhythm & roaring lead guitars.
The band recorded their self-titled debut EP (Vital
Cog Records) with Alap Momin known for his work with
Faust, Jets to Brazil, Rye Coalition, Isis, and of
course, Dälek. 2006 saw the release of their second EP entitled,
Aqueduct. The
new songs are unabashedly urgent, heralding
the uniqueness and fearlessness the genre once
offered. Recorded by Virgilio Castillo (Sugar Hill
Records, Saasquatch Recording and Antlers) and mixed
by Alap Momin and Virgilio Castillo.
BlackSonny have played with Rye Coalition, Radio4, The
Rapture, The Holy Childhood, Pixeltan, Higher Burning
Fire, The Turn-Offs, The Unsane, Dead Meadow,
The Maserati 5, Paper Lions, Palomar, Jett Brando with
Tiger Mountain, Now We Are Louder, and Semi-Automatic.

We must, however, acknowledge, as it seems to me, that man with all his noble qualities... still bears in his bodily frame the indelible stamp of his lowly origin.
