Oftentimes, I’ve been asked to describe Black Vista Highway Patrol, only to lose myself in confusion of how actually to define them. Certain, their music can be categorized by it’s psychedelic feel, such as the long pulsating guitar that connects the segments of “Peace Be With You”, but they also feature a smooth bluesy feel to much of their writing, seen clearly in the pacing and progression of the song “Doll”. Black Vista has elements of hard rock, fast drums and pulsating vocals on “Dimebag of Destiny”; they are just as much, however, defined by their intimate moments such as the depressingly isolate intro to “Dose of Infatuation”. The most appropriate approach I have found to explaining Vista to people, is to label them progressive grunge, a term I coined myself. Grunge, because their music has a raw and untamed feel that makes it seem wild and frantic, just listen to the sheer power of a song like “Mary Cried Wolf” and the intense screaming of “Resist”. Smoking cigarettes to coarsen the voice and using distortion feedback to connect songs, the band’s wily live performances and their rough showmanship is a clear sign to their grunge roots. However, Black Vista is also extremely progressive. From their early days of psychedelic melodies (such as False Mirror, which it seems I alone still listen to) to their hard rock opuses like “Sounds of the Sandman”, Black Vista’s morphing audibility seems to take a course as random yet cohesive as the medications of its lead singer. Today, they emerge with a heavy Blues influence and a more epic feel to much of their music. I would elaborate more, but nobody says it better than they do; “Why am I singing/Nonsensical songs? /To you, maybe they are/ But I think you're wrong/.”
