EDMUND STEINBERGER - SCHICHT
2x3"CDR
"Schicht" (german for 'layer', but also meaning 'shift') is the debut release by Nuremberg based musician Edmund Steinberger. Living in this smaller, almost provincial town, Steinberger is working on his own musical vision since the mid-90s, incorporating improvised and electronic music into his own style. Working abroad of a vivid scene of improvisors and electronic musicians, Steinberger used this circumstance for a positive and different approach on his music and played all the instruments on "Schicht" himself. These pieces, recorded on multitrack and referred to by Steinberger as "overdubbed compositions", show his ongoing attempt to discover new sonic possibilities in each used instrument. Alto saxophon, bass clarinet and flugelhorn are most prominent. Steinberger uses his rich repertoire of playing techniques to create new sounds on those instruments - abstract, but still showing his roots in free jazz. He also made use of piano, viola, bass, a variety of percussion instruments and the Nord Lead synthesizer. On CD 2, Steinberger included field recordings as a sound source to give these pieces a different atmosphere. "Schicht" is obviously influenced by the new "quiet improvisation" scene, but the density and playfulness of these compositions put this recording closer to the tradition of musique concrète.
Edmund Steinberger studied at the Meistersinger conservatory Nuremberg, he is working on his own musical vision since the mid-90s, influenced by free jazz, experimental electronic music and modern classical composers. While still being at school he met Rudi Mahall and Michael Griener, since then Steinberger played with many (mostly short-lived) free jazz bands and took part in countless improvised sessions and concerts. In the last few years he ran a series of interdisciplinary projects incorporating classical singing, electronic music and video art; 2003 saw the release of one of his tracks on the "45 Seconds Of"-compilation on Simball Records. Currently he is also recording under the moniker Hoehe 19, showing the energetic free jazz side of Steinbergers musical persona. A CD of Hoehe 19 is set to be released on italian label Setola di Maiale by the end of 2008. SELFINTOXICATED - SITTING ON MY SELF-BUILT ISLAND
5"CDR
Debut release by Nuremberg-based beatsmith and DJ Selfintoxicated. Spending many years on a healthy diet of underground rap, breakcore and instrumental hip-hop, this first release brings SLFNTXCTD's own music to life. These tracks are instrumental all the way through, rich in atmosphere and innovative in structure and sound. SLFNTXCTD takes the risky way and blends his sometimes stoned, sometimes crisp beats with lots of unusual samples, noisy electronic sounds and minimal melodies. Almost every track evolved out of a very personal situation, visible not only in the track titles, but also audible in the warm and melancholic atmosphere that surrounds most of these pieces. As original as a debut release can be. This guy is one to watch! Available for purchase at: mono-ton recordstore Nürnberg or order directly from us (via paypal)
