About the Gallery:
Operating on the cutting edge of contemporary culture, Blaffer Gallery, the Art Museum of the University of Houston, is Houston's premier venue for an open and ongoing engagement with the ever changing nature of the art of today, the recent past and the near future. We promote a spirit of investigation and discovery in the field of visual art and culture. As a contemporary art museum, Blaffer Gallery operates in the here and now, embracing experimentation and creative acts of daring, originality and vision.
Blaffer Gallery is dedicated to both artistic excellence and original scholarship in the arts. Capitalizing on the museum's location on the campus of Houston's largest insitiution of higher learning, Blaffer's public programs build on the intellectual force of the University community and serve as an active resource for the study of art and art history. Ongoing series such as our Contemporary Salons provide an open and intimate conversational forum through lectures and discussions, while weekday Brown Bag Gallery Tours offer the opportunity for a more casual exchange of ideas.
Blaffer Gallery celebrates artistic imagination, stimulates creativity and inspires independent thinking through a lively dialogue about art and artists. Blaffer's ambitious program includes six to eight exhibitions and publications a year, many premiering at the museum before traveling the world. Combining strong local ties with a global outlook, Blaffer exhibitions feature regional, national, and international contemporary art, presenting artists of diverse backgrounds, ages and ethnicities with a special focus on emerging or under-recognized artists and bodies of work.
Blaffer Gallery, founded in 1973, was named in honor of the late Sarah Campbell Blaffer, a noted Houston art patron and collector. Since its inception, Blaffer Gallery has been a vital force in the presentation and promotion of the visual arts in Houston.
