Born in Montreal in 1985, Blaise Borboën-Léonard discovered his passion for music when he was given his first violin at the age of eight. He studied the violin for several years with Frédéric Lefebvre (Ensemble Romulo Larrea), and from 2001 on, at the Montreal Conservatory of Music with Anne Robert. As an aspiring composer, he took Michel Gonneville’s composition classes and, in order to increase his range of instruments, classes in viola with Jocelyne Bastien. In 2005, he took the advanced university programme of the Conservatory on instrumental composition with composer Michel Gonneville. He also took classes in prestigious chamber music academies in France and Switzerland, studying with masters such as Ervin Schiffer (viola), Kati Sebastyen (violin) and Michel Fourgon (composition).
In addition to his classical repertoire, Blaise developed an interest in pop music. At the age of fifteen he began to play in a variety of venues with various bands. He then founded Triton, a progressive rock band that recorded three CDs of original compositions. Since January 2007, he is the violinist of the avant-garde metal rock band Unexpect. Internationally recognized, Unexpect has given over a hundred shows in 2008, touring all over Europe and with three national US tours.
Blaise Borboën-Léonard plays on a regular basis with L’ensemble Allogène, Unexpect, Hôtel Morphée and Véranda. A versatile musician, he also collaborated with artists such as pianist, composer and poet Frans Ben Callado, famous kora player Ablaye Cissoko in Senegal, the actors of the Théâtre de l’instant, stage director Marie-Josée Bastien, Greek violonist Costas Anastassopoulos, slam artist Queen KA, percussionist/acousmatician Merlin Etorre, bass player Pierre-Philippe Côté, who all benefited from the wide spectrum of his musical interests.
