2008 proved to be big year for Kev Blaze. His debut single, “Watch How I Do This (featuring Krayzie Bone)," sold over 30,000 copies independently, and the video for the song has received over 5.4 million plays on YouTube.
Born and raised in Cleveland, Ohio, Blaze spent most of his early life singing and playing drums at his father’s church. Blaze’s uncle, Beloyd Taylor from Earth, Wind and Fire, had a strong influence on him as well, and at age 18, Blaze formed a partnership with his cousin, Dion “Chips” Warren and the two began developing music together. Their collaboration spawned a new sound dubbed “Street R&B,” which Blaze describes as a true blending of Rap and R&B. Inspired by this blend, Blaze began work on his debut album, "Smoke N Blaze" and signed a recording agreement with Blue Image Entertainment. Raptivism/Imperial/EMI agreed to distribute the album, but shortly after releasing his debut single, Imperial was shut down by EMI, leaving Blaze without a deal, but with the opportunity to release his music independently.
Faced with the challenge of marketing his own music, Blaze created an online presence for himself on MySpace, and reached out to FEE Entertainment to strike a deal whereby Lucas Crukshank, a YouTube sensation amongst teens/tweens for his character “Fred", could use "Watch How I Do This" in his "Fred Loses His Meds" video. The song became an instant hit with "Fred's" large-and-growing fan base, with that video garnering over 21.5 million plays. The song would be featured in many more "Fred" videos, which to date have over 325,000,000 plays on YouTube and have helped to launch Blaze into worldwide fame.
In fall of 2009, Blaze will release his follow up single, “What an Occasion.”
