THE SPORT OF ROLLER DERBY
What is roller derby?
In a nutshell, roller derby is kind of like football on skates…only the football is a fellow skater.
Rules of Play
The game itself is a series of races between two teams of five players. Each team’s jammer is the only player to score points. Three blockers try to stop the other team’s jammer (with legitimate hits and blocking) while propelling their own jammer forward. Each team’s pivot acts like the pace car in a NASCAR race and controls the speed of the pack. She also keeps an eye on the jammers, calls her team’s plays, and acts as a blocker.
History of Roller Derby
Roller derby first appeared in the 1930’s as men and women speed skated thousands of miles on a flat track. Occasional collisions between skaters entertained the audience, and thus the sport of roller derby as we know it today began. Whereas it was originally a co-ed sport, its recent nationwide revival in 2001 has made roller derby a predominantly all-women’s sport.
Roller Derby Today
Today, the exciting sport of women’s flat-track derby is one of the fastest growing sports in the nation, with over 130 leagues nationwide. This rapidly growing sport has founded the Women’s Flat Track Derby Association which has committed itself to establishing roller derby as a legitimate sport through standardized rules and regulations with skater safety in mind. The Blazin’ Banditas play by these standardized rules and consider safety our number one priority.

Hey, Banditas!! Well, once again it's been way too long since I last wrote you. Really sorry 'bout that. I've been doing alright. Reason why I haven't hit ya up in awhile is because the computer I've been using is really old and has been acting awfully twitchy lately!! Luckily, it's been working for me now, so I thought I'd stop by. I plan to get a new computer (preferably, a laptop) when I scrape enough cash together. So, how're things at your end? Were your holidays good? Mine was pretty decent. I got to see a lot of my family over Thanksgiving and Christmas. New Year's I just stayed in and hung out with the family. Typically, I stay in on New Year's, anyways, 'cuz there's just too many "amateurs" out and about. Hope things are well with ya and I hope to hear back from you soon!! I'll try not to be such a stranger next time!! OXOXOX
