Blind Buddy Moody is a native Floridian and a veteran of the southern juke joint circuit. He has appeared on bills with George Jones, Tammy Wynette, Waylon Jennings, Sammi Smith, Kenny Price and Ernie Lee. Buddy is a past winner of Florida state championships in vocals, harmonica, dobro and flatpicked guitar. Blind since birth, he has formal music training only on violin and is otherwise a self taught musician.
Twelve Bar Rag - Blind Buddy Moody Interview
I recently interviewed Buddy for an article I wrote for the Suncoast Blues Society Twelve Bar Rag, July/August edition. Here are some excerpts from the article. Buddy, is a local treasure. I've known Buddy for the past decade. I first met him at a Florida Folk Festival. Buddy is a heck of a musician and entertainer. He has a unique vocal style, incredibly fancy flat pickin', expertise on the harmonica and a pleasing delightful personality. In describing Buddy's music, envision: Hank Sr, Jimmie Rodgers, and flat-picking maestro Doc Watson.
The 2000s/The Steele Brothers/Thousands of Songs: Throughout the last three decades Buddy has earned a living as a massage therapist. He has also supplemented his income by playing music for tips at a flea market. Kevin Steele, of Mojo Gurus fame and brother of Brett Steele (whose company Steele Management manages the Mojo Gurus), is a long-time fan of Buddy's and envisions bigger and better things for Buddy and his music. Kevin introduced Buddy to Brett who agreed that Buddy was too fine a musician to remain hidden away. Brett has now taken Buddy on as a client. Among other things, Brett has set him up with a Myspace site, is working on a CD project for him; and is handling his bookings.
Be sure and take any and all opportunities to experience this outstanding musician/entertainer who by his own count knows "thousands of songs." Trust me, there's not a bad one in the bunch.
