Paul's Interests
|
| General | I have just started to develop an interest in mythology and storytelling which I hope to continue to cultivate. With a lot of effort and some luck I hope to be telling stories to audiences by the end of the year.
My major passion is religious and..or philosophical debate. Though I do believe in right and wrong, I do not think there is any viewpoint no-matter how far fetched that should be dismissed out of hand. "The unexamined life is not worth living."
I also have a strong love of the outdoors. If it involves nature I will like it, whether its meditating on a leaf or flying down a river in a raft I just like to be outside.
Finally I have more everyday interests as well. I like computer games, making movies with my video camera, and writing poetry. In fact now that I reflect on it, these are my specific interests but I am interested in just about everything!
On a more personal note I also enjoy good home cooked food, fine wines and beers, and the occasional cigar.
| | Music | I like just about anythign and I mean that. Ben Folds Five, Battlefield Band, Bob Dylan, Brown Derbies, Moxy Fruvius, Arrogant Worms, Cry Cry Cry, Simon and Garfunkle, U2, R.E.M. About me:
Hi Thanks for dropping in.
So this is the space where I am supposed to tell all about myself. Well then I'll give you a brief life sketch.
First you should know that I was born with my eyes sealed shut and without a nose. Thankfully my eyes did open but I have a severe visual impairment. As you can see I also now have a nose(though it doesn't work). My physical differnces have not hindered my development in the slightest thanks to the love and support I get from my friends and family.
I was born and raised in Iowa until I was about 10 years old. This was a great time in my life. I had good friends, a very loving and supportive family, and plenty of space to play. Then I suffered that first traumatic move where you leave all that you know behind and head off into the unknown. We moved to Ohio, this was a tough and lonely time, but it had its good times too. Like when I spent the summer planting a garden with my Dad and selling our produce at a farmers market. Then we moved to New Jersey, and thanks to the great leadership of the school principle I received a warm welcome. In New Jersey I established several close friendships that I continue to cherish today. All of my friends, and I mean all were conservative fundamentalists, and I was the only liberal, and we would have long debates into the night about everything from the divinity of Christ, and the validity of evolution, to the meaning of the word "obsolete." I greatly enjoyed these debates and they helped me to better understand my own religious and philosophical beliefs.
After seven years of conservatism however, I needed replenishment and so I went to a very liberal college in Vermont. This was also a great place because it was in the woods and I love the outdoors. I have always loved being outside since my childhood. I was in the boy scouts through high school (I got my Eagle) and at college I was able to improve my wilderness skills. I learned to kayak, rock climb, and snowshoe, most importantly for me, I also took advanced classes in wilderness survival and wilderness first aid.
I graduated from college with a BA in Philosophy and psychology, having completed a 120-page thesis comparing Immanuel Kant and Sigmund Freud.
My academic interests include philosophy, psychology, religion, education, and counseling. I decided to pursue all of these interests by going to seminary to get my Masters of Divinity. So I moved to New York City, a substantial change from rural Vermont to attend Union Theological Seminary. Though I originally attended seminary for secular reasons, I have now "found Jesus" in away. I have come to understand that there is a substantial branch of Christians who view Christianity as an accepting and affirming faith that is called to lift up the poor, liberate the oppressed and open the mind. This "Liberal" or "progressive" Christianity, though it deals with modern issues, is not new but rather, it has deep roots in history going back to Jesus, and the ancient Israelites.
So now I am in NYC finishing my Masters of Divinity, with a focus on "Blind Theology," and I'm preparing to get my doctorate.
This may be much more then you ever wanted to know, but it is much less than I could have said. I've eaten with Cree Indians in Canada, and prayed with Buddhists in Japan, and much more. I intend to use myspace as a medium for expressing all of the thoughts and feelings that I have accumulated in my life in a coherent, or semi-coherent manner. And you, as my friend or random passer by, are invited to share with me any wisdom or insights that you may have accumulated on your life’s journey.
Thank you for reading.
