My greatest fear is that I have committed a *sacrilege* by attempting to cover this hallowed Who song. But sitting cross-legged at the edge of a campfire, a million stars reflected in the lake outstretched just beyond my feet, I heard this song playing from someones car radio, and it spoke to me. I was 17, the year was 1972. The object of my vast affection sat staring into the same campfire, oblivious. No one knows what its like to be the sad man.. Behind blue eyes.. Pointed. None of my pain and woe.. Can show through.. Poignant. The words sank into my bones, timeless. Obviously timeless, as 35 years later they can still evoke for me the soft sounds and smells of that wooded night. Young, wistful, in love with the pain of being in unnoticed love, Ive no idea if these same words arouse their author to such melancholy. Reading his memoirs I would think so. If all we create is a projection, they must. Whoever their inspiration, the man behind blue eyes that wrote them must be thanked for giving the world such words on which to hang their memories. So I thank you, Pete. And if I have committed a sacrilege, may I be soon forgiven on the premise that I fell in and out of love with them resonating in the background of a life now soothed by a peaceful happiness. I sense that you, too, have found the same, in Rachel.
