The latest incarnation of Unearthed means that Australian artists can now upload their tracks to the site for everyone to listen to. This Shallow Mercy are a three piece acoustic outfit who do not fit easily into a single genre, utilizing elements of jazz, soul and blues to stand out against the usual folksy framework. Traditional folk music has always provided commentary on society and the world around and the lyrics in This Shallow Mercy’s songs do not disappoint . This Shallow Mercy provide haunting melodies to power a vehicle for poetry about a world gone mad. A world hard to love. A world where greed and selfishness makes it difficult for many on the planet to survive. A world where wealth is obtained by war. A world that embraces dysfunction to its highest degree.
Yet there is sense of hope through the joyful backdrop provided by guitarist Timmy Cann, who meanders like a jazz player with the soul of a blues man. Cann has the ability to make complicated riffs meander along with a cunning simplicity and carry the listener to a state of dreamy satisfaction.
Dramatic counterpoint is created by Jodi Ludwig-Moore (Ex-Dirty Lucy) through her insightful viola and backing vocals. Ludwig-Moore has an uncanny ability of adding depth to the music. By playing only a single note she can add the right dramatic tension and emphasis to both guitar and vocals. As with the viola, Ludwig-Moore uses her backing vocals sparingly and with minimal interaction but to maximum effect..
Together, guitar and viola interact and interweave to create a new level of depth and intricacy that leaves the listener wanting to hear more. The clever interplay of guitar and viola can allow discordant sounds to act as the perfect exchange and provide a new sound that speaks of beauty as well as heart wrenching destruction.
Deb Lord (Ex-Pass the Ammo) is the poet who describes the passion of her lyrics through a soulful voice. As beautiful as the instruments are, it is the interplay of the three musicians that finally create the sound that is This Shallow Mercy. Lord writes clearly about those things that grab her attention and grind her gears. She asks questions of her audience and the world. Questions that make us wonder why, if we are so intelligent, we allow so many stupid and avoidable things happen to ourselves and our planet. Her soaring, soulful voice rises above the crowd but the intricate music supporting and balancing her voice provides the perfect cushion to rest her challenging lyrics.
The combined efforts provide an ethereal mood on which to float away, allowing the words to sink into the mind and take shape with a reality that is not always easy to look at but describes those truths we shy away from. As their name suggests, This Shallow Mercy questions our commitment to our beliefs and desires for a better world.
