For Melbourne-based fingerpicking guitarist Chris White, its Piedmont Blues that ignites his passion. His second solo album Piedmont Blues presents a variety of originals and reworked classics within this traditional music style.
Piedmont Blues is an acoustic fingerpicking guitar style originating from South-eastern America, popularised by Blind Blake and Blind Willie McTell amongst others.
Im attempting to catch the sheer rhythm and ferocity of traditional Piedmont and country Blues and communicate that through clean, stripped back sounds, White says.
Playing acoustic and slide guitar, mandolin, banjo and stomp box, Whites mellow personality shines through his interpretations of Big Bill Broonzy, Chuck Berry, Reverend Gary Davis, Johnny Mercer, Big Joe Williams and Blind Blake songs.
In 2004 White released his debut solo album, From The Sacred To The Profane, featuring interpretations of country Blues from Mississippi Fred McDowell, Mississippi John Hurt, Tampa Red, Robert Johnson and others.
His original track Cropduster Blues won Song of the Year at the 2004 Victorian/Tasmanian Blues Awards. In 1999 his performance at the Port Fairy Folk Festival won a finalist position for the Henry Lawson Songwriting Competition. White regularly performs at the Australian Blues Music Festival, Goulburn and the International Guitar Festival in Frankston.
White says the history attached to Blues directly impacts his appreciation of the genre: Country Blues speaks to me on a level that other music does not. Almost all of the early country Blues is raw and visceral as it reflects lives lived under impossibly harsh conditions.
In almost every song and tune there is a sense of hopefulness and faith in better times ahead. It comes with the intelligence, wit and playfulness in the vocals. Its in the forward propulsion of the beat, White reflects.
