   About blue haiku
blue haiku

"Chocolate canyon chamber folk music" is how one Louisiana radio station describes blue haiku’s evocative songs. The audience is drawn into a vibrant sonic landscape, with panoramic stories which embrace sandstone canyons, coyotes, tree frogs, desert rain and a Venezuelan woman stirring chocolate with a wooden spoon.

blue haiku's first CD, heat beneath the sand, was called "fascinating, fresh and engrossing" by Sing Out! Magazine and received rave reviews from radio stations all across the country from California ("Unique and distinctive") to New Jersey ("A fabulous flow to the music and soundscape producing memories of love and longing"), and Pennsylvania ("Beautiful") to Florida ("intellectually refreshing"). blue haiku has been featured in the Salt Lake Tribune, Salt Lake Magazine and many other publications.

The members of blue haiku are polished and dynamic performers with years of experience in a broad range of musical styles from folk and pop to classical and jazz. blue haiku presents the audience with a lively blend of colorful instruments (oboe, English horn, violin, guitar, upright bass) and expressive vocals, with an onstage display of musical virtuosity.

Bandmembers:

Phillip Bimstein (guitar, vocals, songwriter) – Phillip’s original songs have been performed on MTV; he has co-written with Michael Smith, Kate MacLeod, Otis Ball and others. As a composer, Phillip’s alternative classical works such as Garland Hirschi's Cows and Larkin Gifford's Harmonica have been performed at Carnegie Hall, Lincoln Center, Kennedy Center, Abravanel Hall and London’s Royal Opera House, and by ensembles such as Turtle Island String Quartet, Abramyan String Quartet, Modern Mandolin Quartet, the Contemporary Music Consortium, AirFare and others. Charlotte Bell (oboe, English horn, vocals) - Charlotte is a member of the Salt Lake Symphony, and also plays in the Paradigm Concert Series and with other local ensembles and musicians such as Kate MacLeod and Anke Summerhill.

Flavia Cerviño-Wood (violin, vocals) - Flavia, from Chile, has been a member of the Brockport Symphony in NY, Milton Nascimento and Grupo Agua in Brazil, and The Sol y Luna Band in San Francisco. Flavia has also performed with Cecil Taylor and the Merce Cunningham Dance Company.

Harold Carr (upright bass) - in Utah Harold is known for his work with the Cowdaddies, The Jarman/Kingston Quartet, Amnesia and Wood. He has performed and recorded with Crystal Gale, Bobby McFerrin, Lightnin’ Hopkins, John McEuen, Steve Lacy, Catie Curtis and Matt Flinner. Harold has been a poet and musician-in-residence at the Banff Centre for the Arts in Canada.

blue haiku also collaborates in Red Rock Rondo.
