Tubby, A.K.A. John Kelly Patterson, Tub, and Tubman
Although he says that he will eat anything that does not eat him first, Tubby reminds folks that his nicknames are due to his first instrument, the washtub bass, and not his figure. Tubby plays both a powerful and a slap style of upright bass and can also gracefully bow the bass. He sings tenor and is a champion buckdancer and flatfooter. Tubby is also a "country philospher" and gets folks laughing with his stories. When he is not performing or working in the family’s construction company, he is hunting and fishing.
Mala Patterson, Mala = Malibu without the boo
Mala Patterson plays many instruments, including the guitar, fiddle, wooden spoons, frailing banjo, mandolin, scrub board and piano, and sings. Mala is the Alabama State Buck Dance Champion and dances many other styles. She writes songs and has won songwriting contests. She also has written articles for many publications and has written and illustrated two children’s books. Mala models, acts, paints, and works in the family’s business. She recently completed her Bachlor of Arts degree from Judson College in Marion, Alabama.

Tubby and Mala are a brother-sister team who perform three types of energetic and entertaining variety shows with live, acoustic music; dance; and comedy. The first show employs a large repetoire of songs and another great musician or two. The second show is a fun and educational children's program, in which Tubby and Mala showcase old-time music with traditional and homemade instruments, such as the upright bass, guitar, fiddle, mandolin, and frailing banjo, spoons, scrub board, and washtub bass. They also showcase clog, buck, and flatfoot dance. Tubby, a Native Central American, is an award-winning buck-dancer and flat-footer; and Mala is a state Buck Dance champion. They encourage youngsters to sing; dance; play rhythm instruments, such as the tambourine, spoons, and bells; and join in the fun. The third show is also a duo show. However, in this show, Tubby and Mala perform mainly original songs and throw in a few strong cover tunes for good measure.
Tubby and Mala have recorded music for the award-winning short film Me and Jessie D. and the children’s books that Mala has written and illustrated. They have performed at Ernest Tubb’s Record Shop, festivals, churches, conventions, ski lodges, theme parks, radio and television broadcasts, theaters, and other venues and events in over twenty states. Tubby and Mala recently won the group category of Panoply, the South's Most All-Embracing Artstravaganza, and placed in the Top 25 out of over 5,000 contestants on CMT's CAN YOU DUET.
