Tubby, A.K.A. John Kelly Patterson, Tub, and Tubman
Although he says that he will eat anything that does not eat him first, Tubby reminds folks that his nicknames are due to his first instrument, the washtub bass, and not his figure. Tubby sings and plays both a powerful and a slap style of upright bass and can also gracefully bow the bass. Tubby is also a "country philospher" and gets folks laughing with his stories. When he is not performing or working in the family’s construction company, he is hunting and fishing.
Mala Patterson, Mala = Malibu without the boo
Mala Patterson plays many instruments, including the guitar, fiddle, wooden spoons, frailing banjo, mandolin, scrub board and piano, and sings. She writes songs and has won songwriting contests. She also has written articles for many publications and has written and illustrated two children’s books. Mala teaches music and dance lessons, models, acts, paints, and works in the family’s business. She possesses a Bachlor of Arts degree from Judson College.
Tubby and Mala are a brother-sister team who perform an interactive, entertaining, and educational children's program with live, acoustic music; dance; and comedy. They showcase old-time music with traditional and homemade instruments, such as the upright bass, guitar, fiddle, mandolin, and frailing banjo, spoons, scrub board, and washtub bass. They also showcase clog, buck, and flatfoot dance. Tubby, an Indian American, is an award-winning buck-dancer and flat-footer; and Mala is a state Buck Dance champion. They encourage youngsters to sing; dance; play rhythm instruments, such as the tambourine, spoons, and bells; and join in the fun.
Tubby and Mala have recorded music for the award-winning children’s books that Mala has written and illustrated, performed at a variety of events and venues in over twenty states, won the 2008 group category of Panoply (the South's Most All-Embracing Artstravaganza), and placed in the Top 25 out of over 5,000 contestants on CMT's CAN YOU DUET.
Tubby and Mala it has been too long since ive wrote ya on here!! Have ya'll been down at gurley any here lately??? I hope all is well for ya'll!! Love ya -Tiffany Woodard
We enjoyed seeing you guys play again, we missed the homecoming last year. I think Tubby's new hair style is just fine. If it's good enough for Chuck Liddel, it's good enough for The Tubman. Good luck in Nashville.
