Having a haunted residence can be a very emotional and sometimes scary experience. There are no cure all solutions to a haunting but there are techniques that have produced results on reducing or modifying the phenomena.
First of all, you must try to figure out exactly what is going on in your home and try to rule out other possibilities that are causing the phenomena. Try to keep a journal of what exactly happens, when it happens, weather conditions & other people present. Also, are the witnesses on any medications or under the influences of any drugs or alcohol. Do any of the witnesses have a history of mental illness? These questions may sound a bit personal but to rule out most cases of explainable phenomena, these questions must be addressed
A haunting event can be stressful and even frightening so the first question that needs to be addressed is if the the ghost is to be welcomed. Most haunting activity is not scary, usually it consists of objects coming up missing and later found in other locations, shadows, sounds, and other everyday occurrences. It is believed in general that ghosts are the spirits of dead people and nice people have nice ghosts and evil, mean people have evil & mean ghosts. If the ghost is to be welcomed, no other intervention is needed. If you wish to, you can openly speak to the spirits and say that you understand that they are there and you welcome them. Sometimes spirits are reported to be a calming agent in the home and sometimes the spirits can do nice things for a family or possibly protect a family from danger or other mean spirits
If the ghost is not welcome, there are a few techniques that have proved successful in other cases. First; as we stated earlier, address the spirit in a very respectful manner and say that you are not comfortable with it being in your house. Ask it nicely to leave. It is thought that most spirits don't mean to scare people, they just have an attachment to the house or property. Do not take any other action for at least a couple of days. If the phenomena is still around and it doesn't appear to want to leave, address the entity and set up some ground rules on what the entity can do and where it can go. For example, let's say that every night before you go to bed you go into the nursery and you make sure the crib is up and secure. But every morning you go back into the nursery and the crib is down. You should say to the entity in a respectful but stern manner that this is your house now and that you do not mind that the spirit is here but it can not let the crib down. In many cases; when this advice is given, the phenomena does adhere to these guidlines
There are other things you can try like having a priest or pastor of your church to come by and bless the house.
Don't get us wrong, there is no sure fire method to rid your house of ghosts but hopefully these techniques will help you get through the ordeal.
E.V.P. stands for Electronic Voice Phenomena. EVPs are found using everyday electronic equipment such as tape recorders and camcorders. EVP is a very exciting phenomena because many people are getting results by using simple $10.00 tape recorders you can buy at Wal-Mart. The best type are ones with a USB interface so you can download them to a computer and analyze the evidence with sound editing software.
The most accepted theory of how to capture an EVP is to go to a reportedly haunted location, introduce yourself and explain what you are doing and that you do not mean any disrespect to the spirits. Start the recorder and then ask, "If there is anyone wishing to say anything, please do so now." Wait about 20 seconds and stop recording. Repeat the process asking different questions such as "Are you this the spirit of the person who lived in this house?" or "What is your name?" If you make any accidental sounds(Coughing, talking, bumping into something etc), make a note on the tape explaining what happened so you're not spending time on something non-paranormal. It is also suggested by other investigators that EVPs show up better if there is a low hum or roar in the background, such as heater, fan etc.
EVP are classified into 3 major categories:
Class A-The EVP is very clear & unmistakeable, usually a direct answer to a question
Class B-The EVP is fairly clear and you can basically make everything out
Class C-The EVP is definitely a voice but you can't make out what is said. You need to experiment with these by slowing down/speeding them up or reversing them
This is something that everyone can do with very little expense.
Let's face it, for most of us, our first interest in the paranormal started from watching scary movies as children. Our first investigation was 12/11/2004 at a private residence in Little Switzerland, NC. We arrived around 11:30am on a long and winding gravel road on the top of a mountain. Off to our right you had a breathtaking view of the Appalachian Mountains. As we pulled up to the house, it looked very unique with a very intriguing architecture. I and other investigators noticed an "oppressive" feeling around the whole property. We did a walk through with digital thermometers, electromagnetic field readers, digital cameras, analog tape recorder and a camcorder. Other members of the group interviewed the owners of the house about their experiences. We observed different areas of EMF(Electromagnetic Field) fluctuations and cold spots. We also captured at least 2 Class C EVPs(Electronic Voice Phenomena). One of the EVP's sounded like a male voice whispering a reponse to one of our investigators(Although it was impossible to discern what it said. The other sounded like someone whistling three different times. Overall the residence was a very unique and beautiful place with incredible views and there is no doubt there is paranormal activity happening there. Now were we there during a low activity period and we only captured a fraction of the full "show" or was this dwelling in a low activity area and we experienced all that is going on. Only further investigation can answer that question
There are several energy manifestations that are associated with paranormal activity. It is theorized that when a ghost materializes, it uses the energy in the environment. This sometimes leaves a detectable energy signature. Here are the three major types
Orbs are small free-floating balls of energy that are only seen during playback of a video tape or a photograph. Most orbs are probably dust particles floating close to the camera lense. Another cause for orbs are insects or water droplets. Most investigators believe the only true orbs are ones that emit their own light source and move in a linear motion. Other investigators believe that orbs are simply energy and could be an indicator that if a ghost wanted to materialize, it would have the means or energy source to do so. Most investigators are not impressed by orb photos or video without some other supporting evidence
Plasma is an energy source that seems to be more like an energized mass of energy. The Brown Mountain Lights are thought to be a natural plasma formation. It is thought that ghosts can also use and/or emit plasma-like formations to materialize or maybe they can just manipulate the plasma
Rods are the most disputed formations. Rods look like a stick with small flapping wings along the length of the "creature". Some investigators believe they are evidence of paranormal activity while others believe they may be from another dimension. Rods can only be seen on video tape. The most accepted theory is that "rods" are created when the computer inside a camcorder tries to focus in on an insect that is close to the camera lense. Although I have seen footage of a private residence where "rods" where all over the room and no insects were observed long before and long after the video was shot.
Of course these are theories. One thing is for sure, it is always a good idea to keep an open mind about the unknown

What is a ghost?...You would think that this is a straight forward question with only one answer...A person who has not crossed over to heaven after passing away. This is one possibility of what a ghost could be but there are various other possibilities that paranormal investigators have been studying. Here are some of the most accepted theories
The before mentioned theory that a ghost is a person's spirit that has not crossed over. This theory states that the ghost has all the intelligence and personality that the body had in life. Sometimes the ghost feels an attachment to the physical body and doesn't want to cross over. Sometimes the ghost feels it has unfinished business or messages it must relay to a loved one. Sometimes after a violent or sudden death, the ghost doesn't realize it is dead. Sometimes if a loved one is in trouble, a ghost appears to protect or warn a loved one(Also sometimes referred as a "Guardian Angel")
A Residual Haunting is a haunting event that plays over and over again like a video tape. The ghost does not interact with the observer. The ghost may walk across a balcony and disappear through a wall. This scene may play out over weeks or months and could even last over hundreds of years. It doesn't matter if you put up a wall or an obstacle in the path of the scene being played out. It will pass through the obstacle and continue on it's original course. A theory on what causes Residual Hauntings is that the magnetic fields and other natural phenomena help to make a "recording" on the environment and if the right environmental conditions exist or a person sensative enough to pick up on the recording, they will experience it. This is why sometimes one person can see a ghost and another can not.
Another theory is that a ghost is not the soul of someone who has passed over but it is an electrical by-product of the living condition that remains after death and it retains some of the personality of the living person it once represented.
Another classification of haunting is called a "Poltergeist". This is a German word meaning "Noisy Ghost". This term is for when an unseen force causes objects to be moved around violently. The paranormal community is in agreement that most poltergeist cases are centered around young teenagers. Unknowingly the teen uses telekinesis to move the objects
The final classification is sometimes referred as a demon or inhuman spirit. This is an entity that has never existed in human form. Due to our relative ignorance of their true intentions, you should avoid inviting or opening a doorway for them to enter our world
These are some of the most accepted theories in the paranormal community. Maybe you have a theory of your own.
The Brown Mountain Lights are a phenomena that occur on the Brown Mountain range and the Linville Gorge areas of Burke, McDowell & Avery counties. The lights and be traced back as far as the 16th century by indian inhabitants of the area. They have been studied twice by the U.S. Geological Survey. The lights take on many different shapes and forms depending on weather conditions and other environmental factors. Sometimes they appear as pin-pricks of light that appear for only a brief instant. They also appear as semi-stationary pulsing plasma-like manifestations. Also, they can also appear as large balls of light that move in a slow deliberate manner across mountain ridges. The most spectacular of the occurances is that the lights move vividly jumping from ridge top to ridge top and performing other dazzling manuvers.
The conditions that spawn the phenomena are varied. You can see them on clear nights as well as on cloudy or rainy. A personal observation suggests that the lights can be energized when the atmosphere is charged with activity like right before or after a thunderstorm.
The places you can observe the phenomena are 1)Highway 181 at mile marker 20 2)On the Blue Ridge Parkway at the Lost Cove Overlook 3)Grandfather Mountain 4)Chimney Rock Park 5)Wiseman's View
It is said that the best place to see the phenomena is on Highway 181 but I personally prefer the Wiseman's View location because of the extreme beauty of the area and the huge viewing area. My grandmother was at Wiseman's View in the 1970's and she said that one time the whole mountain ridge was lit up brighter than the Charlotte, NC skyline. Lights were jumping from ridgetop to ridgetop almost like a major highway.
If you do go to Wiseman's View, I suggest arriving about two hours before sunset to absorb the beauty of the area and at dark you may see the phenomena
So...You've caught the "Ghost Hunting" bug and your wanting to go out and start taking pictures. There are several different types of equipment & techniques that have brought back positive results. Here are some tips that should get you going in the right direction
Any camera can pick up paranormal activity from a $5.00 disposable camera(That is the type of camera that got the picture of the crew of the U.S.S. Hunley when they raised it from Charleston Harbour) to $500.00 digital cameras. It really just depends on how much you want to spend. 35mm film cameras are good because any image leaves an imprint on the negative that can help prove or disprove the phenomena. Digital cameras are good because you can see the image immediately to see if you caught anything. They can also be helpful when you do catch something on the camera, you can direct other people in your group where to direct their efforts. The one drawback is there are no negatives. Digital pictures can also be manipulated by a computer so skeptics don't give them as much credence as film pictures
Before you go out on an investigation, take multiple pictures of regular everday things in all kinds of conditions(Darkness, Rain, Snow, Fog, Heat). This is to make you very familiar with your camera's characteristics so you won't be as likely to be fooled by explainable phenomena.
Before you start taking pictures, it is a good idea to take a flashlight and shine it all over the area you are going to photograph. This is helpful because it will show the dust and other particles in the air. Most orb pictures are dust particles illuminated by the flash of a camera.
After you are used to your camera, try going to a graveyard, reported haunted location or really any historical location. Start taking multiple pictures of various locations, take them in brightly lit places as well as shady or dark places. Then(especially in a graveyard) try this experiment. Introduce yourself, explain what you are doing there and you mean no disrespect to the spirits. Explain that you are there to get scientific proof of their existance and you would greatly appreciate it if they could make their presence known. Explain what the camera is and does and that it will not "hurt" the spirit. It is believed that some spirits do not understand that they are dead and they are very confused and frightened. Such conversations have been very successful by other professional investigators.
After you get your pictures back, it is a good idea to buy some tracing paper and lightly draw in pencil a grid pattern. Then place the paper over the picture and make notes of what sections of the photograph have unusual features. This is helpful to analyze the entire photograph. Look at every part of the photograph and then let a friend look at it to get another perspective
Camcorders are good tools for looking for anomolous activity. There are many on the market and they all have their advantages & disadvantages. Analog camcorders are good because analog film is less likely to be tampered with. Digital is good because you can get clearer images. If you have around $400.00 to spend, I recommend a Sony Handicam HC20, HC30, Or HC40. These are as small as a digital camera and they have expansion slots to add infrared lights. With this light, you can see almost as brightly as a lighted room(Although it is Black & White). You can also burn the footage onto DVD with the S-video/audio out feature(If you have a Home DVD burner) Taking video with a camcorder takes the same precautions as with taking pictures with a regular camera, practicing & shining a flashlight looking for dust particles. Using a tripod helps when you are monitoring one room while if you are moving alot, a tripod may not be conveniient. When you take your video, avoid zooming in and out alot. Sometimes the camera makes strange shapes(In darkness) when it tries to reacquire the object in the frame. This affect can look like anomalous activity. Try to take steady images giving audio marker points for reference later. Also make notes of any observations you may encounter, for instance you would want to make a notation of a street light that comes on every 15 minutes outside that casts an eeire glow inside the residence.

March 26, 2001-Members of Blue Ridge Paranormal went to a haunted location in New Orleans, LA in a joint investigation with ISPR(International Society for Paranormal Research). This investigation is part of a service that ISPR is running to let paranormal investigators into some of the most haunted locations in New Orleans to do investigations. For more information:
We started from Jackson Brewery in the French Quarter and we took a bus to a location about three miles away. The investigation was led by Ken Braden. He has been a member of ISPR for about three years. He gave us basic instructions on how the investigation was going to be conducted. We were split into two groups(One with five people & One with seven people). The equipment we used was an EMF reader, digital thermometers and digital cameras. We were given no background history of the location. The power had been turned off to the residence so each group had flashlights to navigate through the property
Our group started upstairs and we went to each room checking first for baseline EMF and temperature readings. The house was underneath a group of power lines so the EMF reader was set to a less sensitive setting because at a more sensitive setting, it would only pick up the power lines. The base temperature was 75 degrees. In the first room, we asked questions like, "Is there anyone wanting to communicate with us?" or "Is this the spirit of a person that died in this house?" We moved onto the next room and we had no measurable phenomena. When we went into the third room, we heard a voice loudly say "Why don't you go back where you came from?" We were in a densly populated area with two different streets on each end of the house so after we heard the question, we ignored it and kept on with what we were doing. At the time we heard the question, the other group was downstairs doing there own investigation. The acoustics in the house were that we could here everything they were doing. They were asked by Mr. Braden if they heard the question and no one downstairs heard anything. The area we were in was a semi-dangerous area of town so a New Orleans police officer was posted outside for our protection. The officer was asked if anyone had came by and yelled the question, he stated that no one had came by or yelled. We went to the room adjacent to then bathroom and we had a temperature spike from 75 degrees to 85 degrees in only one small spot. As we left that room, we were getting ready to go downstairs and I started to notice a cold sensation around me. It almost felt like when an air conditioning unit in a ceiling comes on and you feel the cold air slowly filter down to the floor. As I stated before, there was no power in the house so there was no reason for the sensation. Everyone in our group came over to me and the all felt the cool breeze that had enveloped me. The area around me was measured with the digital thermometer and there was no difference with between the air not located next to me and the air next to me. The estimated temperature drop that the sensation felt like was at least 20 degrees.
We next moved downstairs and we didn't pick up any measurable phenomena.
At the end of the investigation, we were told that at least two people passed away in the residence. It used to be a bar and before that it used to be a bordello. It is reported that a prostitute haunts the house and she likes to play with women's hair and tap on people's shoulders.

Amazing New "Ghost" Photo

This remarkable photo was taken by North Carolina paranormal investigator Richard Liebeck, in the Triangular Field, on the Gettysburg Battlefied, at the Ghost World Conference (July 20-22, 2007). Many Confederate soldiers were slaughtered on this property.
This is a grayscale enhancement by Brian Irish of L.E.M.U.R.
Liebeck used a KODAK DX7590 5mp with a Hoya R72 IR filter. Though he and his brother were alone, to their knowledge, when the photo was taken (during broad daylight), a humanoid figure, resembling a solider, appeared to the right of the frame when the IR filter was used.
This is another texture enhancement by Brian Irish. If you notice that the torso is very pronounced and the head is less pronounced and the legs are almost transparent
It was taken on Sunday, July 22, at 5:10pm. They also measured strong magnetic surges around this time using a Tri-Field Natural EM Meter.

I have been investigating the paranormal for eleven years. I met Richard Liebeck in 2004 and have have investigated with him. The one thing that I can tell you about him is that he would never release evidence that he did not believe to be 100% authentic. Knowing what I do about the standards he holds, I say this is a Ghost.

When the photos were taken, Liebeck reports it was partly cloudy and around 85 degrees. Shortly before he captured the apparition, he took a regular photo without the IR filter around 4:57pm. That photo showed a strange hazy spot. Perhaps this hazy spot reflects the apparition's position, yet the distinct figure could only be seen once the filter was used.

I began using digital infrared in 2006. In March of that year, I caught two apparitions at Devil's Den. The photo from the Triangular Field looks genuine provided that there were no people in frame. Since then, I have been successful at other locations. Another member of our group, Craig Rupp, took the best infrared photo I have ever seen when he was on Little Round Top earlier this year.
Brian Schill of the IPRF sent me a photo that one of his members took. It looks good as well.

Absolutely amazing. I have been to Gettysburg once. I didn't know that it was haunted until I saw men walking way off and thought that it was someone looking for something in the grass. Found out that we were the only ones in that area and I was told later when I mentioned the men in the field that it was haunted and I probably witnessed a ghost. Great pic. Maybe I'll post my freaky pic and see what y'all say.

the photo taken by R. L. on his trip was sent to me by another team member of his and I want the readers of this post to know that I did everything I could to it to break it down to determine whether I could find any tampering with the photo. I used several different software applications in this process with high magnification and I could not debunck the picture. Usually, if it is tampered with you can get to a point where you can find a point that the image no longer matches exactly to the background pixels. As far as I am able to say it is my belief that the image captured is legit. One of the things that I really appreciated about the picture posted was of the one he took just prior shot in normal lighting which still clearly shows the outline of some form. It is congruent with the filtered photo and seems to represent the same shape. I find these photo submissions to be good evidence for the furthering the claims of paranormal activity. This photo was taken 13 minutes before the soldier photo without my IR filter. If you look closely, you will see a small misty area in the center. Zoomed in you can see what almost looks like a face. This was the photo taken directly before the soldier photo. This may be the same anomaly but the IR filter may have helped to bring out the full image

On August 1, 2007, while hosting Take A Stand on News Radio 570 WWNC, I interviewed Dr. William R. Forstchen (he was live in the studio) regarding this photo. It was between 3 and 4pm.

I think this photo is amazing! Keep up the great work everyone! If you are ever in Las Vegas...you should visit Bally's hotel...I work the Jubilee! show here. This hotel was originally the MGM which had a tragic fire around 25 years ago. There are spirits around. I hope to someday get equipment to prove it. However those of us who have experienced don't need proof.
