Angela Brown
Angela Brown is certainly a Blues Diva – „raucous, raunchy and rumbustious“ are just some of the words used to describe this great singer.
Born in Chicago, Illinois. Angela began her musical career by singing gospel music in church and performing with school choirs. And, although she was aware of the blues, she didn..t devote herself to singing them until around 1980, when she played the role of
Gertrude “Ma” Rainey in a stage musical. Inspired by the music, she worked, honing her craft, in numerous Chicago blues clubs, often accompanied by pianists Little Brother Montgomery, Erwin Helfer or Lovie Lee, or sharing the stage with her music friends, the likes of ..Blind.. John Davis, Pinetop Perkins, B.B. King, Georgie Fame, Long John Baldry…the list goes on. Her Debut recordings were released by the Red Beans label in 1983, and the first album under her own name was made in 1987 for the German label, Schubert Records.
She was dubbed “The Bessie Smith of the Eighties” and later the 90..s, a deserved title given her strong renditions of vaudeville blues material. Her powerful voice is also well-suited to more modern blues and jazz styles, becoming a popular attraction at festivals all over the world; not only vocally, but for her onstage presence and oomph!!
Angela has been included in The Guinness Book, ..Who..s Who of Blues.., and the new
..Virgin..s Encyclopedia of the Blues... Making her one of the few Living Legends in Blues Music today.
Past years have seen Angela voted in France “International Chanteuse De L..Annee 1999”, and in the U.K. “Overseas Female Artist of the Year and her album
“Thinking Out Loud” with her English band The Mighty 45s was runner up as the UK Album of the Year 2000.

2006 sees the release of Angela and her favourite 4 piece band, The Mighty 45s, new C.D. “In A Dangerous Mood.”

BAM, Black American Music, nennt Angela ihre Musik, wenn man sie nach Ihrer bevorzugten
Stilistik fragt. Black American Music, das ist Blues, beflügelt von Gospel, Soul und Jazz.
Das ist aber auch die Geschichte unserer heutigen Unterhaltungsmusik, in der jede neue
Stilistik zunächst von schwarzen Musikern entwickelt wurde.
Der Blues ganz am Anfang, parallel dazu in den baptistischen Kirchen des amerikanischen
Südens der Gospel, dann der Jazz, später der Rock’n’Roll.
Fast immer handelten die Songs von Geschichten, die das Leben schrieb, solche, wie auch Angela sie singt. Geschichten über ‘Love, Life and Babies’, über die Arbeit und das Vergnügen, über den Blues, den jeder versteht. Ihre Bühnenpräsenz sucht ihresgleichen, ihr Publikum hat sie vom ersten Augenblick an im Griff.

Angela Brown, in Chicago als "the hottest lady in town" gefeiert, sang schon mit neun Jahren nachts heimlich in den Clubs von Chicago.
Sie ist nicht nur durch Charme, Witz und Persönlichkeit raumgreifend. Ihre Stimme ist gewaltig, sie selbst unwiderstehlich. Angela Brown hat die Aura der legendären Bluessängerinnen der Zwanziger Jahre und sie tritt damit nahtlos die Nachfolge von Sängerinnen wie Bessie Smith und Ma Rainey an.
Geboren wurde Angela Brown 1953 in Chicago. Natürlich hat sie, wie fast alle schwarzen Sängerinnen, zuerst in der Kirche gesungen, dann aber Schauspielunterricht genommen und einige Jahre als Schauspielerin gearbeitet, bevor sie die Rolle der Bessie Smith in einem Musical angeboten bekam. Da musste sie singen.
Und wie sie sang... a star was born!
1982 wurde sie festes Mitglied in der ERWIN HELFER BAND. Die europäischen Bluesfans hörten ihren Namen zum ersten Mal 1983, als sie mit den CHICAGO ALLSTARS nach Europa kam. Von der Presse wurde sie überschwänglich als die "Bessie Smith der 80er Jahre" gefeiert. Die Fachpresse bezeichnete sie als "das Beste, was dem Bluesgesang in den letzten Jahren passiert ist".
Weitere Tourneen folgten, mit ERWIN HELFER, dem INTERNATIONAL BLUES DUO und 1986 nochmals mit den CHICAGO ALLSTARS.
Anfang der Neunziger Jahre zog Angela Brown nach Europa und ist seither von der europäischen Jazz- und Blues-Szene nicht mehr wegzudenken.
