J.B. Hutto, Jack White, Seasick Steve, Bob Brozman, Bob Log III, Cherry Lee Mewis, Hollowbelly, Blind Willie McTell, VV Brown, Ting Tings, T-Model Ford, John Lee Hooker, Mississippi Fred McDowell, R.L. Burnside, Jimmy Reed, Lonnie Pitchford.
My name is ‘BluesBeaten Redshaw’, a name given to me by a great blues singer — Cherry Lee Mewis.
I’m now 16 and play home built, old and vintage guitars in my own soulful style. I also play my speciality homebuilt 1 sting electric ‘Diddley Bows’. I have been featured in the June 2007 ‘Guitar & Bass’ magazine and more recently, in the ‘Blues Matters’ magazine.
I started playing guitar 3 years ago by picking up chords from local musicians and bands. I was shown different guitar tunings by a local bass player and guitarist and I had some guitar lessons with the village guitar teacher, Howard. I then just messed around with different tunings for a while and played in local ‘open mic’ sessions.
I heard the Mississippi hobo ‘Seasick Steve’ on Jools Holland’s Hootenanny in 2006 and even ended up meeting him and having a 3 string jam backstage with him in Sheffield. Steve has influenced my slide style on my home built cigar box guitars, Diddley bows and my old guitars as well. The music sets my internal atmosphere and my lyrics just tell you damn straight how I feel.
I just keep playing and jamming with all the folks I meet along the way. Aswell as Being inspired from a broad rage of music and era's.
A listen to a blues track such as the late great Muddy Waters, ‘Mannish Boy’, get’s me musically deep into the hill country and delta of Mississippi. I found such artists as Lonnie Pitchford and Compton Jones and I’m inspired by the history and hardship that drove the blues to what we know today.
Other inspirations you’ll find in my record box will be the modern indie band the ‘Ting Tings’, the Norwegian vocalist ‘Ida Maria’ and the fantastic Do-wop Indie singer ‘VV Brown’. So from 78s to 7" of Florence and the Machine or The Yeah Yeah Yeahs. Although if you where to ask me who my 3 main musical influences where I'd say; J.B. Hutto, Jack White and Seasick Steve.
Early last year I released my first EP ‘Songs from Shed 2’ (which is where all my instruments are built) and I’ve now got on sale my first full record. This features 11 of my own tracks ranging from solo to featuring drummers and bass players. I also have released a single from the album called 'All My Life' which is my Diddley Bow song and also features ahort intro and B-side. You can find this single exclusivly available for download on iTunes, AmazonMP3, Napster, etc.
You can find short segments of my current single on my MySpace page. I’ve been adding videos to my YouTube page (links below) for about 3 years now and you can find other live videos of me from different users too so just search 'BluesBeaten Redshaw' and you'll get me, so check them out and let me have your feedback please, it’ll be positively received.
Thanks for slidin’ through my site and check out my gigs page to see what’s goin’ off.
