I was born on a shrimp boat, in the Mississippi Delta, in hard times. There wasn't even a year for it, they just called it "hard times". I cut my chops on the "chitlin circuit" throughout the early 60's, backing many a has-been, and many more "ain't never been's". I'd spend winters on the boat when times was tough, then I caught a parasite from eating raw shrimp in '69, and moved to the West Coast to recover. I was left on the doorstep of a nice mexican family in La Puente, Ca., and they raised me to become the mexican that I am today.
Assumming that you have figured out that the story above is a joke, I'll give you a brief look into Joe Calles' musical universe...In 1976, at the age of FIFTEEN, I was given a bass and, with a couple of short sabbaticals, I've been playing ever since.
At the moment, I am playing bass in many diverse settings. I play blues with the Blueshounds. Rock/blues with Snooks Jordan. Jazz with the Sacred Vibes. Latin/Rock with Bottom Line. I also serve in the music ministry at my home church, Water of Life in Fontana, as well as at Calvary Chapel Golden Springs in Diamond Bar. In the past I have played with artists as varied as reggae/Afro artist Selasse, jazz guitarist Ray Fuller (George Duke, Whitney Houston), worship leader Chris Falson, christian bluesman Daryll Mansfield, keyboardist/saxman Todd Q. Lynch (Helen Bailor, Crystal Lewis), blues legend Eddie C. Campbell (Muddy Waters, James Brown), B-3 organ master Deacon Jones (John Lee Hooker, Curtis Mayfield, Freddie King, Santana). First band I ever played in was led by a one-legged borracho/guitarist/flautist/clown/pied-piper/brother-in-law named Sergio Ibarra. I will always be thankful to him, Dennis Felix and Rick Gallegos for allowing me to join the party!!!
I'm also available for last minute fill-ins...
