College roommates gone... well... a little crazy, B'MO Crazy is what happens when drummer/percussionist Kayle Donner and bassist/violinist Owen Norquay set their instruments aside and approach music from a different angle. Armed with nothing more than a drum machine and a notebook full of rhymes, B'MO Crazy aims to write songs that make people dance, make people laugh, and maybe (with a little luck) even make people think.
B'MO Crazy's sound is an eclectic mix of electronic dance music - ranging from drawling crunk jams to frenzied, uptempo barrages of percussion – punctuated by quirky, tongue-in-cheek rapping. While Norquay coaxes unique sounds out of a modest-looking drum machine, Donner pokes fun at various aspects of urban life with rhymes that often land where they aren't expected but always seem to fit just right. Subject matter includes such everyday themes as waiting for a bus, working in the service industry, and finding an apartment, all approached with a dry wit that never fails to elicit laughs from the crowd. B'MO Crazy also display a harder side, though not without an obvious sense of irony. Songs about drinking, violence, and womanizing all manage to retain the pair's playful aesthetic, as in Hard as Fuck, where phenomenally violent lyrics are contrasted with glockenspiel melodies that sound like they couldn't hurt a fly.
Donner and Norquay both come from strong musical backgrounds – Donner holds a degree in percussion performance and Norquay has had years of classical training on both the upright bass and the violin. The two made a place for themselves in the Toronto indie scene playing drums and violin/keys in local band Clouds That Look Like Things. This helped them move quickly, releasing their full-length debut album Viva La Shit-Son Revolucion! in April 2009 just six months after their first show. It probably doesn't hurt that the pair share an apartment and write and record all of their music out of their home as well.
On stage is where the chemistry between the two really shows. Their live set rarely pauses for even a moment, and the two take the stage with a relentless energy that never fails to get a crowd moving. Both have acting experience, and bring a sense of theatre to each show, which they describe as being equal parts music and performance art. Donner and Norquay generally perform in costume (with an ever-changing wardrobe), and have previously designed elaborate themes for their live performances. For example, for a Hallowe'en show the two carved jack-o-lantern masks out of whole pumpkins, then performed their set dressed as scarecrows sporting ripped jeans, flannel shirts and pumpkin heads.
B'MO Crazy brings a party, while also bringing something different. There are a lot of things worth being serious about, but these are two musicians who just wanna laugh it off.
