As the 2009 Taste of Chaos tour came to a close in Montreal, Quebec last night the usually upbeat backstage was somewhat subdued. Whether because of late nights in Toronto yesterday or flat out road weariness finally catching up to them, the time before and after show was spent mostly saying goodbye to friends and planning next moves. However, there was always time for a few last minute tour pranks. Four Year Strong found themselves surrounded in the middle of their last song by a gang of fake bearded look a-likes all dressed in FYS hoodies, among them included BMTH’s sound guy and Oliver Sykes father.
Tomorrow sees the band embark on the first date of their headlining tour with The Sleeping and Canada’s own Straight Reads the Line. We will be heading up to Ottawa and after seeing the frenzied crowds drawn to the bands direct support slot, headlining a smaller club tour should see some great crowds and great moments to capture.
Our time with Bring Me the Horizon has lead us to the nations capital. Home to the Prime Minister and today, the UK's biggest metal export BMTH. The show was a bright and early one, with the band taking the stage at 8pm. This didn't fail to quell the spirits of the rabid fans who came out in force with lines around the block as early as 3:30pm for the bands first headline set of the tour. The show itself could only be categorized as intimate, as the fog of sweat hung thick in the air and the crowds surging bottleneck created an endless human barricade. The band effortlessly whipped out fan favourites like "Chelsea Smile" and "Pray for Plagues" and seized their first opportunity sans barricade to get in the crowds face and match their energy. The reaction of the fans could only be matched by the heat of the room, which was overwhelming for us as a film crew, let alone a band standing front and centre. How somebody was not carried out of the crowd Michael Jackson circa "Thriller" tour is still beyond me. BMTH was noticeably stoked after the show seeming eager for another chance to win over the hearts of Canadians from coast to coast. See you in London!
Today we embarked on something a little different in our tour diary adventure up to this point. We decided to show you the men behind the curtain that make it possible for BMTH to do what they do every night. Special thanks to all the guys in the crew who shared their stories, insights and gave us unprecedented access to their pre-show setup and duty's during the set. We had a great time. Its a world that most people never get to see and done by people who don't as much credit as they deserve. As we roll in to London it's time to salute THE CREW.
Happy Easter everyone. Although by the time you read this it will be over, I still feel obliged to muster one more festive greeting. There was a destructive force in the air around Club Wax tonight. It could have been the fact that there was a solid three hours of pummeling metal, but it also might have been that the boys in BMTH spent the hours pre show deconstructing any and all items they could find behind the venue. Not only did a poor Chocolate Bunny lose limbs in an impromptu photo shoot, but after they found an old TV behind a dumpster, a rousing game of hurling rocks to see who could break it first ensued. It was a great way to kill a few hours. For future reference, we discovered it takes much more effort to break the glass on a TV than you would expect. Next stop Windsor.
My initial reaction looking at the tour itinerary was that Windsor would be a great show followed by a quiet early night for everyone involved. In this case I underestimated my present company. Windsor featured some of the best filming opportunities for our crew yet what with a huge VIP balcony giving us our first chance to get a great view of a packed house thrashing around like their clothes were on fire. Windsor also marked the first date of the tour which featured an encore. BMTH rarely indulges in the most overused schtick in rock music, but had they not they risked a riot outside the venue. Congratulations also need to be paid to Ian Sykes (Oli's dad for those who have been following along) who after much doubting was able to successfully attach a glass of sambuca to his bare chest and make it stick on it's own. If there wasn't photographic evidence I would have never have believed it. Tomorrow marks our last day with the guys in BMTH and if the last week is any guide, it should be a time for the ages. Until then.
Everyone on the bus woke up bright and early after a long night of partying to visit the Niagara Falls during the last day spent in Canada. Ever wondered what would happen if you threw yourself over the falls in a barrel? Us too. But there was no time for fall jumping come lunch time, because everyone was starving and nothing was open yet - except for the arcade. Lots of money was spent on racing cars and basketball shots. Shortly after playing in the arcade, we all went to the Rainforest Cafe...the strangest meal I've had in awhile for sure. We had to endure a storm every 22 minutes (thunder and rain, animals going wild) as we tried to enjoy our food. After we got our bills, we caught a cab back into St. Catharines where everyone relaxed until the show started. And let me tell you, I think Oli was right - this was one of the best shows of the entire tour. It must have been because of the intimate setting in this tiny club - energy was fed back and forth between the band and the crowd at an intense rate, leaving everyone both in the pit and onstage covered in sweat and cheer. As sad as it is that the tour is over, everyone will be happy to be home for a short visit before heading back on tour again. Next stop for BMTH? Belgium!
Now what's next for BMTH Invades Canada Tour Diary? Some more photos, videos, and all of that fun stuff to recap what happened within the past week.
Thanks for checking us out, and keep in touch, we will keep updating!
If there’s one thing we can take away from the first day on the road with BMTH it’s that fans of the band would take a bullet to the chest just for the chance to scream one lyric or share a brief encounter with the band. As BMTH’s banner was raised to the rafters, the Koolhause erupted with emotion. After closing out a blistering set chock-full of mosh pits and crowd surfing it was important to stand back and realize that BMTH wasn’t even headlining the show. As a special event, front man Oli Sykes entertained friends and die-hard fans alike as a guest DJ at a special Taste of Chaos after party held at The Social. If this is any indication of what’s to come, it’s going to be one hell of an adventure. Be sure to check out the page for all the pics and footage from day 1. Stay Tuned for more updates.
