Guitarist, composer, and arranger, Bob DeVos has been critically hailed as “a master with a sound to die for--rich, full, deep, positive, round and warm--a brilliant, knowing bebop player.“ With long, blues-drenched melodic lines and a horn-like approach, Bob has his own signature style. Critics universally admire Mr. DeVos' "full, liquid tone" and "soulful, intelligent interpretations” and “beguiling compositions”. Mr. DeVos’ CDs as a leader for HighNote/Savant and Blues Leaf Records have earned rave reviews and many stars in Downbeat and throughout the jazz media. His two most recent Savant CD's “Shifting Sands” and "Playing For Keeps" were high on the national jazz charts for 46 weeks, (rising to 6), andwere on many lists of top CDs of the year. They feature Bob with his trio plus guest artist and long-time collaborator Eric Alexander. Mr. DeVos heads his own powerhouse Bob DeVos Organ Trio with Dan Kostelnik on the Hammond B3 and Steve Johns on drums. He also collaborates frequently with Eric Alexander, Mike LeDonne, Onaje Allan Gumbs, Hendrik Meurkens, Ray Vega and in trio with Billy Drummond and Mike McGuirk. Bob was the musical director/guitarist for An Organ Summit Supreme, reuniting with organ greats Dr. Lonnie Smith and Trudy Pitts and tenor sax legends David “Fathead” Newman and Houston Person. He is a member of Bill Warfield’s New York Jazz Repertory Orchestra.
An in-demand player, Bob also has a large and far-reaching discography as a sideman. Bob has a strong following for his innovative work with a who’s who of jazz greats both in and outside of the Hammond B3 organ genre. Bob has played and recorded with the legendary Hammond B3 organ groups: Richard "Groove" Holmes-Sonny Stitt, Jimmy McGriff-Hank Crawford, and especially Charles "The Mighty Burner" Earland’s group with Eric Alexander and Jim Rotondi. He deepened his compositional and harmonic skills playing with Gerry Niewood’s Timepiece featuring Dave Samuels, and as a member of the forward-thinking Ron McClure Quartet.
In recent years, Bob has performed at the Kennedy Center, The Kimmel Center, The NJ State Theater, The Blue Note, Iridium, The Jazz Bakery, The Kitano, SMOKE, Chris’, the Smithsonian, the San Diego Art Museum, Birdland, The Jazz Cruise, Zanzibar Blue, and numerous festivals in the US and worldwide, including the JVC Jazz Festivals in NYC and Miami Beach and The San Francisco Jazz Festival. Mr. DeVos is currently on the music faculty at Lehigh University and teaches privately. An innovative and sensitive teacher, he has done extensive work in jazz clinics worldwide, and has also taught at William Paterson University and was a 2005 artist-in-residence at Newark, NJ’s prestigious Arts High.
