Bob Marley & The Wailers was a reggae band created by Bob Marley in 1974, after Peter Tosh and Bunny Wailer left the precursor band, The Wailers. The brothers Carlton (drums) and Aston "Family Man" Barrett (bass) – who had joined The Wailers four years earlier, they were backing the Wailers when they were musicians in Lee "Scratch" Perry's studio band The Upsetters – chose to stay with Marley. [1]
Bob Marley & The Wailers consisted of Bob Marley himself as guitarist, songwriter and lead singer, the Wailers Band as the backing band, and the I Threes as backup vocalists. The Wailers Band included the brothers Carlton and Aston "Family Man" Barrett on drums and bass respectively, Junior Marvin and Al Anderson on lead guitar, Tyrone Downie and Earl "Wya" Lindo on keyboards, and Alvin "Seeco" Patterson on percussion. The I Threes, consisted of Bob Marley's wife Rita Marley, Judy Mowatt and Marcia Griffiths.
Sometimes, usually for marketing purposes, recordings are indiscriminately attributed to either "Bob Marley", "The Wailers", or "Bob Marley & the Wailers".
Influences
Rasta-influenced Bob Marley & The Wailers' music that critically focused on morality and social issues. Peter Tosh, Bunny Wailer, and Bob Marley were some of the most outspoken musicians of the time, and were clearly mavericks. They were also working with producer Lee "Scratch" Perry at the time, who is famous even to this day for being extremely rebellious.
Sounds Like
Bob Marley & The Wailers had the Studio One ska sound and their polished, popular Island roots sound and the style, mid-tempo early reggae/rock steady, featuring a gritty sound produced by Lee "Scratch" Perry and progressing to Rasta-influenced.
Robert Nesta Marley was born on February 6, 1945 in the parish of St. Anns in Nine Miles, Jamaica. Bob Fest & Agricultural Fair was created to celebrate the birth of the Legendary Reggae Artist and to make a correlation between the Spring celebration & the Spring planting season by including the agricultural fair. 2009 saw 2,000 attendees to the Free Family Day Event held at Mo'oheau Park and Bandstand in Downtown Hilo, Hawaii and the anticipation for 2010 is growing with interest.
