About me:

I've represented the people of Canberra in the Federal Parliament since 1988. I began my parliamentary career as a Senator for ACT, was elected to the House of Representavies as the Member for Canberra in 1996, and following a redistribution in 1998, was elected as the Member for Fraser.

I held the Cabinet portfolios of Arts and then Trade in the Keating government, and have held a range of shadow portfolios since 1996, including Industrial Relations, Indigenous Affairs and Finance.

After Labor's election victory on 24 November 2007, Prime Minister Kevin Rudd appointed me Parliamentary Secretary for International Development Assistance.

National Sorry Day

"Today we honour the Indigenous peoples of this land, the oldest continuing cultures in human history.

We reflect on their past mistreatment.

We reflect in particular on the mistreatment of those who were Stolen Generations—this blemished chapter in our nation’s history.

The time has now come for the nation to turn a new page in Australia’s history by righting the wrongs of the past and so moving forward with confidence to the future.

We apologise for the laws and policies of successive Parliaments and governments that have inflicted profound grief, suffering and loss on these our fellow Australians.

We apologise especially for the removal of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander children from their families, their communities and their country.

For the pain, suffering and hurt of these Stolen Generations, their descendants and for their families left behind, we say sorry.

To the mothers and the fathers, the brothers and the sisters, for the breaking up of families and communities, we say sorry.

And for the indignity and degradation thus inflicted on a proud people and a proud culture, we say sorry.

We the Parliament of Australia respectfully request that this apology be received in the spirit in which it is offered as part of the healing of the nation.

For the future we take heart; resolving that this new page in the history of our great continent can now be written.

We today take this first step by acknowledging the past and laying claim to a future that embraces all Australians.

A future where this Parliament resolves that the injustices of the past must never, never happen again.

A future where we harness the determination of all Australians, Indigenous and non-Indigenous, to close the gap that lies between us in life expectancy, educational achievement and economic opportunity.

A future where we embrace the possibility of new solutions to enduring problems where old approaches have failed.

A future based on mutual respect, mutual resolve and mutual responsibility.

A future where all Australians, whatever their origins, are truly equal partners, with equal opportunities and with an equal stake in shaping the next chapter in the history of this great country, Australia."

As Australians indulged in over $200 million worth of chocolate this week, some 100,000 children were forced to work as slaves on cocoa fields in West Africa producing 70% of the very chocolate we eat.

In 2001, all the world's chocolate companies made a promise to end child slavery in cocoa by July 2008. We only have four months to go.

We need young people like you to lead the movement. Become an End Child Slavery Ambassador today.
Applications close this Friday 4 April, so sign up today!

Head to www. endchildslavery. com to get involved!

Hey Bob.
I was sad to see that you weren't given a ministerial position today as you are, without a doubt, one of the best people in the parliament. Your passion for fairness, justice and development is something that I deeply admire and am inspired by.

Hi Bob,
Here we are again being bombarded by the Mendacious never ever gst experienced prime minister John the honest Howard with his smear campaigned tactics to destroy the Harry potter image of Kevin Rudd where the future is looking brighter in the magic mirror, to tackle the evil ways of Bribing Saddam Hussien of 300million dollars, Blaming 97 billion dollars labors debt, spending a million dollar a day on worthless workchoice adverts that is correlated to his core and non core promises to make australia relax and comfortable to his choosen mates and business partner that hates the labor supporter unions, grow up Mr Howard and be an Aussie Fair Dinkum whom you never ever had an aota of fairness.

Thanks for your support Bob!
Please join us on Stand Up Day.

Join millions around the world on October 17(International day for the eradication of Poverty) by participating in this year's "STAND UP AND SPEAK OUT" global event.
Last year 23.5 million people took part in what the Guiness records called 'the largest ever human mobilisation in the history of the records'

This year we aim to break that record.

You can help - and it's easy!

Join together with your friends, school mates or work colleges on October 17, stand up and read the pledge. Count how many people have 'stood up' at your event and report it. It's that easy!

For full details and to register your event visit www.makepovertyhistory.com.au - or if you live outside of Australia you can visit www.standagainstpoverty.org

Stand and be counted.

Hi again...quick question...i'm studying internationol politics and development studies at uni...and seeing as you are the shadow member for development assistance...are you guys yet to outline any plans for international aid/development etc? namely, australia's input to reaching the millenium goals on time...we are such an over-consuming nation, so it isn't much for us to contribute to make sure we meet the deadlines and help eradicate the world from extreme poverty...cheers, keep up the good work, PERI.
