  • Bio

Born in Buffalo, Bob Smith has the distinction of being the first openly gay comedian to appear on The Tonight Show and also have his own HBO Comedy Half-hour. Other TV appearances include Politically Incorrect, The Late, Late Show, Entertainment Tonight, Tom Snyder and Comedy Central's Out There. Bob's Lambda Literary Award winning collection of essays Openly Bob was published to acclaim by Rob Weisbach Books/William Morrow and his most recent Lambda Literary Award nominated book Way To Go, Smith! was published by HarperCollins. He's written for Amblin Films, The MTV Video Awards, Dennis Miller, Roseanne and was a staff writer for Fox's MAD-TV. His sketch, The Zapruder Films was recently featured in The Best of MAD-TV. Bob's comic essays have appeared in the anthology Americas Best Contemporary Humorists: Mirth of A Nation and 101 Damnations published by St. Martin's Press. His most recent essay, "The Test" appears in When I Knew edited by Robert Trachtenberg. Bob is a regular contributor to Out magazine. He's appeared in HBO's documentary about the first gay and lesbian family cruise, All Aboard -- Rosie's Family Cruise. In October, he taped a comedy special for Logo Wisecracks/Outlaugh that's airing SOON! and in November, Bob was filmed for a Logo documentary about six gay male standup comics. Look for it in June. It's called Laughing Matters -- the men BUT THIS IS BOB'S BIG NEWS: His first novel, SELFISH AND PERVERSE, a comedy set in Los Angeles and Alaska, will be published in September 2007 by Carroll & Graf. Here's some blurbs that will appear on the cover: “Selfish and Perverse is witty and hilarious, full of surprising twists, laugh-out-loud observations I wish I were smart enough to have made, and a whole lot of swarthy Alaskan fishermen. Who'd have guessed salmon could be so sexy?” --Stephen McCauley, author of THE OBJECT OF MY AFFECTION AND ALTERNATIVES TO SEX "Who is this 'Bob Smith' and why is he reluctant to use his real name? He should be proud, because SELFISH AND PERVERSE is a fantastically entertaining book. Something this funny has no right to also be this beautifully written." -- David Rakoff, author of DON'T GET TOO COMFORTABLE “Selfish and Perverse is very funny yet ineffably bittersweet, razor sharp yet fair to all. Bob Smith's highly quotable comic metaphors are also poetry." -- Mark O’Donnell, author of Getting Over Homer "Bob Smith fills his book with the kind of witty, insightful observations that inspire readers to repeat their favorite lines to their friends and inspire other writers to contemplate suicide. He has also accomplished the seemingly impossible task of writing a sexy book about fishing." -- Marc Acito, author of HOW I PAID FOR COLLEGE: A NOVEL OF SEX, THEFT, FRIENDSHIP AND MUSICAL THEATER
  • Influences

Interests

  • General

Hiking, Alaska, Birdwatching (i'm in the closet about that though), And the usual threesome for many gay men: Art, Film and Theater. (Although I hate films about theater. What's that about?), archeology, history. I have a house in Santa Fe but live most of the year in New York. I'm pretty curious and adventurous: I've gone rafting down the Copper River in Alaska and also have braved performance art in Soho.
  • Music

The Psychedelic Furs, Modern English, Depeche Mode and especially Bronski Beat all those eighties new wave type bands. Then I love weirdo things: The soundtrack to Fahrenheit 452 by Bernard Herrman, Native American music, Samuel Barber's Adagio for Strings, Madonna, Coldplay etc. Basically, I'm a homo who'd rather listen to pop music than go to the opera.

It makes you laugh, it makes you horny, it makes you want to fish for salmon." .. Armistead Maupin, TALES OF THE CITY ..Selfish and Perverse is witty and hilarious, full of surprising twists, laugh-out-loud observations I wish I were smart enough to have made, and a whole lot of swarthy Alaskan fishermen.
