Breath of Fire Latina Theater Ensemble creates opportunities and leadership roles for Latinas in the visual and performing arts. We aim to produce work that reflects impacts and empowers the Latino community. We believe in the transformative power of theater and aim to raise awareness of critical issues in the community, entertain and challenge, foster cross-cultural understanding, be a catalyst for social justice change, and spiritual healing.

FEBRUARY – MARCH 2009 SEASON OPENER HURRICANE IN A GLASS - A World Premiere & winner of BOFLTE New Works Festival‘08

Trapped in a Miami nursing home during a howling hurricane, three generations of Cuban-American women struggle to preserve their fading culture.

JULY 2009 BOFLTE SECOND ANNUAL NEW WORKS FESTIVAL
A weekend dedicated to promoting, producing and celebrating the work of Latino playwrights. The winning selection will be produced by BOFLTE and will open the theater company’s 2009 season. Submission Deadline July 1, 2009
July 24 - 26, one weekend only!

SEPTEMBER – OCTOBER 2009 A World Premiere of and in Honor of Hispanic Heritage Month!
MISS LEBRON written by René Solivan
Directed by Jesus Reyes
(A BOFLTE New Works Festival Finalist)
Based on actual events, Miss Lebron examines the controversial life of Puerto Rican Nationalist, Lolita Lebron. Her life offers a scolding look at the cherished assumptions of the relationship between the United States and Puerto Rico. Miss Lebron digs underneath the façade of this tropical paradise and finds a past filled with oppression and a society whose culture and heritage have been suppressed to justify imperialism. With simmering rage, Miss Lebron struggles for years to attain Puerto Rico’s independence from the United States.

THE MEDEA COMPLEX written by Patricia Crespin - A World Premiere!

The Medea Complex is a loose adaptation of Euripides Medea, with a Latin twist. Medea thrives on the weakness of others and reeks of temptation and doom. She encompasses all women who stand to be judged for their actions and apologizes for none of it. Gertrudes is an aging warrior, fighting for her self respect, desperately trying to find it through Medea. Jason is a greedy fool who manipulates his way in and out of the lives of those who love him and naively brings tragedy to everything he touches. Throw in a haunting soundtrack and a kooky guard and you’ve got The Medea Complex.
