Mission Statement
Breath of Fire Latina Theater Ensemble creates opportunities and leadership roles for Latinas in the visual and performing arts. We aim to produce work that reflects impacts and empowers the Latino community. We believe in the transformative power of theater and aim to raise awareness of critical issues in the community, entertain and challenge, foster cross-cultural understanding, be a catalyst for social justice change, and spiritual healing.

A weekend dedicated to promoting, producing and celebrating the work of Latino playwrights. The winning selection will be produced by BOFLTE and will open the theater company’s 2009 season. Submission Deadline July 1, 2009

Based on actual events, Miss Lebron examines the controversial life of Puerto Rican Nationalist, Lolita Lebron. Her life offers a scolding look at the cherished assumptions of the relationship between the United States and Puerto Rico. Miss Lebron digs underneath the façade of this tropical paradise and finds a past filled with oppression and a society whose culture and heritage have been suppressed to justify imperialism. With simmering rage, Miss Lebron struggles for years to attain Puerto Rico’s independence from the United States.

THE MEDEA COMPLEX written by Patricia Crespin - A World Premiere!

The Medea Complex is a loose adaptation of Euripides Medea, with a Latin twist. Medea thrives on the weakness of others and reeks of temptation and doom. She encompasses all women who stand to be judged for their actions and apologizes for none of it. Gilberto is an aging warrior, fighting for his self respect, desperately trying to find it through Medea. Jason is a greedy fool who manipulates his way in and out of the lives of those who love him and naively brings tragedy to everything he touches. Throw in a haunting soundtrack and a kooky guard and you’ve got The Medea Complex.

Josefina López’s WHEN NATURE CALLS – A World Premiere and Earth Day Extravaganza! Opens Friday, April 17th, by award winning artist, playwright and coauthor of Real Women Have Curves.
When Nature Calls explores the connection and the responsibility of women to nature and the potential change they can create in a volatile world. The Women of Nature include: “the Battery Woman”, based on a Ching-Ching Ni - a woman in China, obsessed with collecting used batteries and bringing awareness to the dangers of how they can contaminate water; Alma, a journalist obsessed and haunted by the murdered women of Ciudad Juarez, Mexico, and trying to find justice and peace for their souls. Moe, a former drug dealer who turned her life around and volunteered for the red cross during Hurricane Katrina and ends up being in charge of a the “Cajun Dome” where her past experiences and her inner strength prepared her for the job of her life; and many others and not to forget, Mother Nature!

Aristophanes’ Lysistrata – a Classical Greek Comedy!
Opens Saturday, May 16 and runs through Saturday, June 6
A comic account of one woman's extraordinary mission to end “the war” the Peloponnesian war. Lysistrata convinces the women of Greece to withhold sexual privileges from their husbands as a means of forcing the men to negotiate a peace, a strategy however that inflames the battle between the sexes. The play is notable for its exposé of sexual relations in a male-dominated
society and for its use of both double entendre and explicit obscenities. Basically it's really funny even today.

Breath of Fire Latina Theater Ensemble’s New Plays Festival 2009

Are you a Chicano/Latino Playwright trying to find a place to produce your work? Breath of Fire Latina Theater Ensemble is accepting submission for its 2nd Annual New Works Festival. All submission must be original with no previous professional production or been published. College productions and staged readings will be accepted.
4-6 Finalists will be selected to participate in a staged reading at our festival July 24-26th. The winner will be announced on July 26 with a possible option for a further development/workshop and or future production.Our Deadline for all submissions is June 1, 2009.
Our 2009 Season Opener Hurricane In A Glass was our 2008 New Works Festival Winner. Breath of Fire will also be producing Miss Lebron and The Medea Complex, finalists in the 2008 Festival. Next year it could be your play!
Guidelines: plays by Chicano/Latino playwrights; no previous professional productions or published plays accepted; staged readings or college productions will be accepted;
Types of Material: full-length plays, one-act plays.
Submission procedure:email script only; no mail accepted at space
Production considerations: maximum 10 cast members (prefer under 6), modest production demands.
Facilities: Black Box Space. 40-50 seats
