Boho is a rock band that was formed in the small Western-North Carolina mountain community of Mills River. Singer/guitarist Zack Harding, 22, and drummer/keyboardist Wayne Redden, 15, are half-brothers and have shared a close musical bond for many years. Together, the two have a chemistry and natural musical tightness that can only be shared by two brothers. The group is rounded out by Bassist Joey Bellamy, 23.
The group’s name was inspired one day when Zack was looking up information on Jim Morrison. The singer/poet was often labeled a "bohemian" which essentially refers to a working class artist or musician, as opposed to those who would have been hired to entertain nobility in the old days. These types of musicians were also referred to as jongleurs or troubadours. This attitude and sensibility seemed to fit the band’s outlook on music and life pretty well, so they stuck with the name "Boho" which is a shortened version of "bohemian."
Like many groups, labels come short of adequately describing the group’s music, but they are definitely a rock band, they enjoy the occasional jam and improvisation, they embrace their Southeastern heritage with traces of southern sound, and their musical influences span from the 50’s all the way into the 2000’s. A large portion of their repertoire is original with those tunes being the focus of their output. Original songs ranging from southern-rock stompers to jammed-out ten minute psychedelic-funk romps to straight ahead acoustic singer/songwriter type pieces. They can also play a great deal of cover tunes with a large emphasis on classic rock and a few soul/funk songs.
Zack and Wayne have independently self recorded two cd’s worth of original material with very minimal equipment. The group is proud to say that no one other than the band members were involved in creating these efforts, with some songs including over 30 tracks of orchestrated parts including mandolin, djembe, synth, and many other instruments.
