Thomas Francis Meagher was born in Waterford, Ireland and educated at Clongowes and Stonyhurst.
In the young Irish Uprising in 1848, the following nine men were captured, tried and convicted of treason against her Majesty the Queen, and sentenced to death: Patrick Donahue, Charles Duff, Michael Ireland, Morris Lyene, Thomas MacGee, Terrance MacManus, Thomas Francis Meagher,John Mitchel and Richard O'Gorman.
Before passing sentence, the judge asked if there was anything anyone wished to say. Meagher, speaking for all replied: "My Lord, this is our first offense, but not our last. If you will be easy on us this once, we promise on our word as gentlemen to try and do better the next time. And the next time....sure we won't be fools enough to get caught."
Thereupon, the indignant judge sentenced them all to be hanged by the neck until dead and drawn and quartered. Passionate protests from around the world forced Queen Vctoria to commute their sentence to transportation to far wild Austrailia.
In 1874, word reached an astounded Queen Victoria that the Sir Charles Duffy, who was elected Prime Minister of Austailia, was the same Charles Duffy who had been transported twenty-five years before. On the Queens demand, the records of the other men revealed:
Thomas Francis Meagher, Brigadier General and organizer of the Civil Wars famous Irish Brigade of New York, and Governor of Montana,
Terence MacManus and Patrick Donahue, Brigadier Generals United States Army,
Richard O'Gorman, Governor of Newfoundland,
Morris Lyene, Attorney General of Austrailia, in which office Michael Ireland succeeded him,
Thomas D'Arcy MacGee, member of Parliment, Montreal, Minister of Agriculture and President of the Council Dominion of Canada,
John Mitchell, prominent poitician and father of John Purroy Mitchell, Mayaor of New York.
