“Beyond the Blues” the debut album of The Back Alley Players is just that; it’s way beyond the blues. An album full of jazzy undertones laced with Electric and Funk blues rhythms, “Beyond the Blues” will encourage all listeners to cut a funky step.
Vocalist Umar Conry opens the album with cuts “You Make Me Crazy Baby”, “Been Lying” and “Can’t Get You Out of My Head” three very distinctly blues songs that make you wonder – Who is this woman? The horns, drums and guitar licks make you pat your feet and pop your fingers to the beat. “Nuttin’ But The Blues” features a cool rhythm that will cause you to nod your head and dance to the funky horns, guitar fingering of producer and lead guitarist Johnny T and the uncomplicated drum beat of renounced jazz musician Stix Bones.
“G String Blues” is a cut that puts you on the porch with a glass of iced tea swaying to the groove. “Lazy Road Blues” is a laid back track that features lead whistling by Philippians’ musician Ceasar Abiog, accompanied by the minimalist tapping of snare drum rims, groovin’ bass guitar, and hand tambourine. This song brings to mind three guys standing on a street corner on a hot summer day playing their blues away.
Reaching back to a more traditional sound “I Got the Blues” and “Back Alley Blues” takes us to the early years of the genre with the use of simple lyrics, an old fashioned mandolin and the sweet sounds of Johnny T strumming on his guitar.
“Beyond the Blues” is rounded out with the smooth voice of Umar covering a Robert C. Guidry classic “The Jealous Kind” which speaks of Blues’ favorite topic, love and loss.
“Beyond the Blues” includes the talent of some of New York's finest Jazz and R&B musicians. The music takes you beyond the traditional blues sound to a grooving, soulful, and funky style.
