    Boneshaker: A Bicycling Almanac's Interests
GeneralMany bicycle related publications currently circulate, both in the mainstream and below sophisticated radars; the dedicated commuter, however, now has a compendium of information to aid and occupy him or her on rides long and far, alone and in groups. The bicycle army simply requires one to ride, and ride often. Onward!

Prepared under the direct inspiration of bicycles everywhere.

From "Bicycling and Freedom in American Film: The Ice Storm" by Mr. Dan DeWeese

"...We are used to seeing bicycles presented as an antidote to commuter-traffic stress, fossil-fuel poison, or middle-age spread. In The Ice Storm, though, Wendy’s solitary bike ride is the only moment of ease or grace that appears to occur anywhere in town. This is bicycle riding not as an antidote to stress or indolence, but to the experience of daily life as a slow hell. And the duration of the relief Elena enjoys while admiring her daughter as she glides past on the blue cruiser? About ten seconds."

From "The Bicycle Paintings of Ms. Jackie Avery"

"...Boneshaker, as it is apt at and known for doing, therefore promptly tracked down Jackie Avery, the artist in question and whose work we could collectively not stop thinking about or discussing for many days. We have had occasion since then to ask the talented Ms. Avery a few questions about her inspirations and, appropriately, her prominent attraction to bicycling.

Boneshaker: How long have you been painting?

Jackie Avery: I’ve been painting all my life. My mom is a professional sculptor, and I really have her to thank for demonstrating that making art is a valid career choice. She is very nutty and irreverent, and a great artist.

BA: What got you into painting portraits of bicycle-related subjects specifically in the first place?

JA: My first bicycle painting was a gift for my husband Jake, who is a bike nerd. Of course, that was before we moved to Portland where there is a totally different scale for bike nerdiness. Now he’s just normal. Jake’s greatest bike score was bringing an old butcher’s delivery bike back from York, England, and restoring it. That bike was a beast! ..."

From "Is Biking, Is Rain" by Mr. Matthew Hein

"How does it feel when get inside? Sometimes have to pee, so slam the door, peel off rubber gloves that go “thwack,” and hustle to the bathroom with helmet, bag, and jacket All on. Wet laces wet inside the rubber gloves or no rubber gloves, just wooly sleeves. Wet, usually with some part not wet, like under arms and under upper legs. And then, what to remove next? To put socks and pants on rocks near heaters, start boiling tea water before stripping, to listen to a record in the meantime? It’s just so nice to vacate, evacuate. Don’t pee in rain-soaked clothes. Maybe comes call, or remember a date, a show, a party for someone. Make the tea, or pour the hot water and honey and lemon with whiskey. That’s nice. It’s dark at five thirty, morning or night. Doesn’t need checking, the window or web..."

   Boneshaker: A Bicycling Almanac's Blurbs
About me:

Boneshaker: A Bicycling Almanac is a pocket-sized periodical published as often as possible with the intent of providing relevant and literary considerations of bicycle commuting.

Complete with interviews of respected members of the bicycling community, as well as profiles of bike-related grassroots organizations and individuals (not to mention essays, graphs, lists, letters, news, charts, maps, facts, figures, diaries, reviews, and stories by and for the common cyclist), Boneshaker is a collective ode that attempts to shine light on utilitarian bicycling, that fundamentally lonesome experience one has in the saddle, and the results of repeating that ride over and over in different directions on different days with different destinations in each instance.

Boneshaker always welcomes literary bicycle-related submissions. See our website for guidelines: www.wolverinefarmpublishing.org.

Who I'd like to meet:

People who ride their bikes day in and day out.

And, of course, Congressman McHenry (R-NC):
