Born in Chicago in the late '50s, Boney Fields was brought up in the West Side of Chicago. Several members of his family sang and played both gospel and blues, while he himself studied Jazz in elementary school when he started learning to play trumpet.
He then discovered soul and funk on the radio and television through major artists such as James Brown, Ike and Tina Turner, Otis Redding and many more...
As a “Windy City” native, Boney acquired his stage experience by playing regularly in the city's numerous clubs, meeting up with some of the top artists of the scene. It was in one of those clubs that he met Singer-guitarist Jimmy Johnson, who offered him his first professional gig, putting his name on the map. For the next 20 years, Boney kept on working with the best blues artists in the country, building himself a reputation as an horn player, then as a band leader.
He played and toured all over the world with legendary blues musicians such as Little Milton, Buddy Guy, AC Reed, Albert Collins, James Cotton, Son Seals, Junior Wells, Smokey Wilson, Kenny Neal or Lucky Peterson. He also recorded or performed on TV shows with major acts from the the Soul/Funk scene such as George Clinton, Bootsy Collins, Maceo Parker, Fred Wesley and others...
In 1997, Boney carried on his career as a trumpet player, MC and then arranger, first for Luther Allison and then his son Bernard. He also played with Liz Mc Comb and French-speaking artists such as Alpha Blondy, Patrick Verbeke, Karim Albert Kook, Paco Sery, Check Tidiane Seck and many others.
Boney finally took the major step of his career in 1998: he set up his own band, The Bone's Project. A full-on seven-piece funk band, with an amazing rhythm section and a dazzling horn section. Ever since, blessed with an incredible sense of showmanship, Boney has been pushing back the limits of the blues genre. The band's live performances are a mix of raw energy, tight grooves and brilliant horn arrangements and the audience's response has been more and more enthusiastic wherever they played.
With an average of 70 shows per year, The Bone’s Project's reputation has been growing steadily as Boney and his band played relentlessly not only all over Europe but also in the Maghreb, Madagascar, Lebanon and even Sri Lanka.
Boney recorded 3 CDs so far under his name :
- Hard Work in 1999
- Red Wolf in 2003 (under Nocturne Distribution)
- We Play the Blues in 2006, (Nocturne Distribution) with such guests as Lucky PETERSON, Fred WESLEY, Corey HARRIS, french harp player Jean-Jacques MILTEAU and Miss Martha HIGH, who performed with James BROWN for 30 years ..
Boney now splits his time between Chicago and Paris. In october 2009 will be released the first Calbum Live + DVD of his band : Live at Jazz à Vienne
